THIS year looms as a landmark one for Toowoomba Golf Club at Middle Ridge with the Darling Downs club celebrating an impressive 130 years since first opening its fairways in 1896.
Rather than simply reflecting on a proud past, the club is using the milestone as a springboard for the future, unveiling a series of on- and off-course improvements that underline its ambition to remain one of Queensland’s must-visit golfing destinations.
Central to those plans is the first stage of a major clubhouse renovation, highlighted by the rebirth of the club’s main function room.
Due for completion in early April, the refreshed space has been designed to broaden the club’s appeal beyond the fairways with a strong focus on attracting weddings and corporate functions while still serving as a welcoming hub for member events throughout the year.
The upgrade reflects the club’s evolving role within the wider community, positioning Toowoomba GC not only as a premier golfing venue but also as a destination for celebrations, business gatherings and social occasions.
On the course, work is also underway to enhance the playing experience. Two more holes will undergo significant improvement works, including full green replacements and upgraded bunkering, continuing a rolling program of course refinements aimed at preserving the layout’s reputation as a true test of golf.
General manager Andrew Webb said the anniversary coincided with an exciting period of growth and renewal for the club.

“The club has had significant growth over recent years and, with membership numbers achieving an all-time high, we are looking forward to further improvements to the golf course and clubhouse in the next stage of developments,” Webb said.
For golfers who enjoy a true test and a formidable challenge Toowoomba golf course is considered a championship layout.
The layout is defined by its rolling, well-shaped, tree-lined fairways and short rough that is forgiving enough to keep play moving.
Its well-manicured greens are renowned for rolling true, rewarding confident putting and precise approach play.
With four sets of tees, the course offers an enjoyable yet testing examination for golfers across the handicap spectrum. Measuring 5950 metres from the back tees (5438 metres for women), it places a premium on controlled, accurate shot-making rather than brute strength, ensuring its challenge remains timeless.
Aside from the course layout, the club’s warm hospitality and the sweeping views across the Darling Downs have long been part of its appeal, creating an experience that lingers well beyond the final putt.
Today, that winning combination – a classic course, genuine friendliness and first-class amenities – continues to define Toowoomba Golf Club.
As it marks 130 years of history, the club stands proudly as Queensland’s second-oldest golf club, behind only Townsville, and very much a modern facility with its sights set firmly on the future.
And as Webb is quick to remind visitors and locals: “Visitors are always welcome.”
