Akshay Bhatia’s jailbird putter and the bag that won him the Texas Open

Akshay Bhatia stands out on tour for so much more than simply being left-handed.

Bhatia draws a lot of attention with his putting style and choice of club.

His Texas Open win saw him secure a place at the Masters and earned him high praise from another famous leftie in Phil Mickelson.

“No, he doesn’t need to do anything different,” Mickelson told Sportskeeda.

“Just keep fine-tuning what he’s doing. He’s on a great path, and he’s gotten so good that all he has to do is just fine-tune, fine-tune. He doesn’t have to do anything different, and he’s already incredible. He’ll just keep getting better, just like he has.

“I have a lot of respect for him. We first met and started spending time when he first turned pro. He came to the conclusion that over the course of the next four years he’ll progress more as a player if he were to turn pro and go through the challenges of playing professional golf during those four years that he could be in college.

“He had the foresight to make a really tough decision and make the right decision for him because it’s turned out that after winning a couple of times he’s progressed very fast in these last four years and come a long way. He’s got an incredible golf game. What a career he has.”

Bhatia already has the backing of Callaway Golf as a staffer with a full bag from the famous brand.

Off the tee, he uses the Callaway Rogue ST Max, customized for his requirements.

His 3-wood is a newer club with Bhatia going for the Callaway Paradym Ai Smoke Max with 15 degrees of loft.

To bridge the gap to his irons he uses a Callaway Apex UW prototype hybrid.

Bhatia putts with an Odyssey Versa Jailbird 380 Putter which isn’t unique on the PGA Tour but it is quite a rare choice.

The jailbird design makes it a very good rhythm putter where the golfer feels like the club is almost playing the shot.
