Aldrich Potgieter: what driver does the PGA Tour’s longest hitter use?

Aldrich Potgieter’s headlining performance at the weekend’s Mexico Open included a blistering 61 and a heartbreaking playoff defeat to maiden PGA Tour winner, Brian Campbell.

But despite his 10-under third round and top-two finish that was agonisingly close to the $2m winner’s cheque, it was the South African’s colossal ball striking that has again raised eyebrows across the golfing sphere.

Having led for most of the weekend, the rookie who moved to Western Australia at the age of 14 showcased his continued rise having been the second youngest winner of the Amateur Championship at 17 and the youngest Korn Ferry Tour champion in history when winning The Bahamas Great Abaco Classic at age 19.

The 20-year-old drew comparisons to American two-time Major winner Bryson DeChambeau as he muscled his golf balls down the fairway and cut corners at a stunned VidantaWorld.

He ranks No.1 on the PGA Tour for Driving Distance this season, just nudging out Rory McIlroy at the top of the DD charts.

Throughout the 72 holes at Vidanta Vallarta, Potgieter’s devastating power helped him show the way in distance off the tee and successfully shorten the West Mexican course.

And his weapon of choice – the Titleist GT3 driver.

The Titleist GT3 was engineered to meet the demands of powerful hitters seeking both distance and precision – a low spin option with an adjustable weight customisable to suit the individual’s swing and trajectory making it ideal for maximising distance off the tee.

His longest bomb flew a massive 374 yards as he averaged 324 yards off the tee across the course of the event, which looked set to be his first PGA Tour event win.

This aggressive approach paid dividends as he led the field with 27 birdies, also ranking 1st for Strokes Gained: Putting using his Scotty Cameron 009M Tour Prototype putter.

As well as his near-miss in Mexico, Potgieter also made a run at the Farmers Insurance Open title at the notoriously difficult Torrey Pines South Course last month.

He was third after 54 holes at Torrey before slipping away on Sunday. But from what we’ve seen so far, surely a first PGA Tour win can’t be far away.

A highlight of his 61 in Mexico included a dazzling driver off the deck as he reached the 661-yard par five dance floor in just two shots.
