Troia Golf is among the Alentejo region’s most established courses.
PORTUGAL has long been recognised for the quality and diversity of its golf, and a new chapter is taking shape along its Atlantic coast.
In the Alentejo, the region stretching between Lisbon and the Algarve, a growing collection of exceptional courses are bringing a distinctive dimension to the country’s golf landscape, shaped by vast natural spaces, coastal scenery and a strong sense of place.
Among the region’s most established courses is Troia Golf. Set on the Tróia Peninsula, just south of Lisbon and surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean and the Sado Estuary, the course has been part of Portugal’s golf story for more than four decades. Designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr., it is a course in which the landscape is never simply a backdrop: pine forest, dunes and ocean views are woven into the experience of every round.
Now, more than 40 years after opening, Troia is entering a new phase, with an extensive renovation designed to revamp the course while preserving the qualities that have made it so distinctive.
The project centres on the restoration of the original Robert Trent Jones Sr. design, with a focus on improving the playing experience and bringing the course even closer to its natural surroundings. The involvement of the Trent Jones family adds another layer to that story, bringing a third generation of the architectural lineage back to Troia and creating a direct connection between the course’s past and its future.

All 18 greens will be rebuilt, while fairways, playing surfaces and bunkers will be refined. Native sandy areas and coastal ecosystems will also be restored, strengthening the course’s natural character and its links-style feel. A new irrigation system will support more efficient long-term water management and course conditioning. The changes extend beyond the course itself. A new practice area will include an enhanced driving range, dedicated short-game facilities and a 3,000 square metre putting green, creating a more complete space for practice and gathering. The clubhouse is also being reimagined, with a more contemporary approach centred on natural materials, open-air spaces and views across the Atlantic.
Together, these changes are part of a wider evolution of Troia as a destination, bringing golf closer to the nature, gastronomy and relaxed coastal lifestyle that have long defined the peninsula.
That evolution is also taking place within a changing Alentejo golf landscape. With projects and courses such as Dunas, Torre and Pinheirinho adding to the region’s growing appeal, the area is beginning to offer a different perspective on Portuguese golf.
The changes at Troia Golf are part of a wider transformation taking place across the destination. Hotels, the marina and the range of sports, leisure and lifestyle experiences are all evolving, bringing a renewed energy to Troia.
