Alta Mesa’s Environmental Leadership
Arizona is one of the most popular golf destinations for its warm climate and sunshine, but its water shortage is no secret. This challenge is putting pressure on golf courses to reduce their usage, and Alta Mesa Golf Club (AMGC) is leading that charge in the east Valley of the Sun.
General Manager and Superintendent’s Efforts
General Manager Scott Mattiello joined the team at AMGC because of their leadership in water conservation. AMGC was the first valley course to install MiniVerde greens 22 years ago. He expressed admiration for Superintendent Mike Molton’s initiative to present the TifTuf solution to the Arizona Alliance for Golf. Molton, a Turf Grass Science graduate from Clemson University, created a collaboration with the AAG, a coalition formed in 2022 to protect Arizona’s golf industry and correct misconceptions about golf and conservation.
Adoption of TifTuf
Courses in the AAG are trialling many types of turfs, but AMGC is embracing TifTuf wholeheartedly. Their successful trial in the summer of 2021 led to a 20% reduction of water usage. This convinced them to establish TifTuf on the whole course in 2023. They completed the TifTuf installation in twelve weeks, without any course closing required, at a cost of $1.5 million.
Member Benefits of TifTuf
Members appreciate the fact that there is no downtime when other courses close for their overseeding of rye grass in October, which is prime Arizona golf weather. AMGC remained fully operational this last October, allowing 3,000 rounds to be played while other courses were shut down. TifTuf is indeed a one and done solution.
SOX Erosion Control System
AMGC took a second step as stewards of water reduction by installing the SOX erosion control system around their beautiful lakes during the turf conversion project in 2023. This is a cutting-edge technology designed to halt lake edge erosion and water loss through seepage/soil wicking in the long term.
AMGC Course and Amenities
AMGC’s course was designed by Dick Phelps in 1984 and offers a challenging and enjoyable golf experience for all player levels. The course is nestled within a spacious community, preventing encroachment onto fairways and greens. Their practice area is extensive with plans for future enhancements.
Services and Cuisine
Members and guests receive a warm welcome from the parking lot to the pro shop, which is fully stocked with many apparel and accessory options. On-course attention is assured by the efficient beverage cart and member guest services. Chef Marc Woodward manages an extensive menu at the Sunset Grill, promising a variety of delectable meal choices.
Membership Details
Membership director Kim confirms that AMGC’s membership fees are low, making the club one of the most affordable in the Valley of the Sun for a fully private club. AMGC is an equity club owned and operated by their members, with a variety of membership options catering to couples, families, and non-golfers. Kim can be reached at kim@altamesagolf.com or 480-832-3257 ext. 100.
