Puwit Anupansuebsai of San Diego State claimed the individual title by one stroke over Tyson Reeder of Arkansas and led the Aztecs to third place in the NCAA Men’s South Regional Championships at the Golf Club of Tennessee in Kingston Springs, Tenn.
The top five teams advanced to the NCAA Championships at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz., on May 28-June 2.
Vanderbilt captured the Regional title with a score of 279-280-275—834, 18-under-par, followed by Arkansas at 283-280-282—845 and San Diego State at 281-276-290—847, while North Carolina State totaled 277-288-284—849 to tie for fourth with Clemson, which finished at 287-279-283—849.
Anupansuebsai, an Aztecs senior from Thailand, carded a score of 71-67-67—205, followed by Reeder at 69-72-65—206 and William Moll of Vanderbilt at 69-71-67—207.
In his previous three starts, Anupansuebsai tied for second in the Wyoming Cowboy Classic, tied for first in the Western Intercollegiate and lost in a playoff, and tied for first in the Mountain West Conference Championship, which he won in playoff.
Anupansuebsai, whose fourth career title made him the first San Diego State golfer to win a Regional title, recently was selected to the All-MWC team for the third consecutive year.
Youssef Guezzale of San Diego State carded a score of 69-68-71—208 to tie for fourth with James Piot of Michigan State, who wound up at 72-68-68—208, Turk Pettit of Clemson, who wound up at 70-69-69—208, and Reid Davenport of Vanderbilt, who came in at 65-72-71—208.
Rounding out the scoring for San Diego State were Callum Bruce in a tie for 37th at 70-72-75—217, Zihao Jim in a tie for 41st at 71-69-79—219, and Steve Sugimoto in a tie for 53rd at 72-73-77—222.
In the West Regional at Tumble Creek Club at Suncadia Resort in Cle Elem, Wash., the University of San Francisco finished second and Pepperdine was fourth, both advancing to the NCAA Championships.
East Tennessee captured the Regional title with a score of 280-270-288—838, 14-under, followed by USF at 278-283-287—848, Wake Forest at 278-287-285—850, Pepperdine at 279-289-283—851 and Florida at 284-290-284—858.
Long Beach State was 12th at 288-298-296—882.
Shiso Go of East Tennessee State claimed the individual title at 70-68-67—205, while Joey Vrzich of Pepperdine shot 69-72-65—206 to tie for second with Alex Fitzpatrick of Wake Forest, who finished at 67-68-71—206, and Tristan Mandur of Utah totaled 68-68-71—207 to tie for fourth with Archie Davies of East Tennessee State, who wound up at 68-63-76—207.
Matt McCarthy of Santa Clara shot 70-71-69—210 to tie for sixth with Ricky Castillo of Yorba Linda and Florida, who finished at 68-73-69—210, and Hunter Epson of Long Beach State tied for ninth at 71-73-67—211.
Rounding out the scoring for Soren Lind of USF led the scoring for the USF at 73-69-70—212 to finish in a tie for 11th that included Dons teammate Tim Widing, who finished at 68-72-72—212, and another USF player, Christoffer Palsson, who wound up at 66-71-75—212.
Rounding out the scoring for USF were Matthew Anderson in a tie for 22nd at 72-75-70—217, and Toby Briggs in a tie for 39th at 72-71-77—220.
For Pepperdine, William Mouw shot 72-71-70—213 and finished in a tie for 16th that included teammate Clay Feagler, who totaled 70-71-72—213, while Joe Highsmith tied for 39th at 68-75-77—220, and Dylan Menante tied for 61st at 76-76-76—228.
Andi Zu of the University of San Diego tied for 10th in the Southwest Regional on the University of New Mexico Championship Course in Albuquerque, N.M., and led the Toreros to a fifth-place finish.
Texas Tech won the Regional title with a score of 283-278-277—838, 26-under, while Arizona State totaled 285-279-284—848 to tie for second with Oregon State, which finished at 281-275-292—848, while Oklahoma was fourth at 289-284-278—851, followed by San Diego at 296-275-281—852.
Stanford finished seventh at 287-285-284—856.
Ryan Hall of South Carolina took the individual title with a score of 68-68-69—205, 11-under, while Sam Bennett of Texas A&M shot 68-71-67—206 to tie for second with Jonathan Brightwell of Oklahoma, who wound up at 66-70-70—206.
Ludvig Aberg of Texas Tech shot 70-69-68—207 to tie for fourth with Dan Erickson of Texas A&M, who totaled 68-71-68—207, Bastien Amat of New Mexico, who finished at 70-66-71—207, and Spencer Tibbits of Oregon State, who came in at 69-66-72—207.
Xu led San Diego in that tie for 10th at 74-68-68—210, while teammate Donald Kay tied for 18th at 74-69-70—213, while Charlie Reiter totaled 73-71-72—216 to finish in a tie for 28th that included another Torero, Jamie Cheatham, who wound up at 75-67-74—216.
Blake Hathcoat of St. Mary’s tied for 15th at 72-68-72—212, Karl Vilips of Stanford tied for 18th at 72-70-71—213, Gavin Cohen of Loyola Marymount shot 73-75-68—216 to finish in a tie for 28th that included teammate Riley Lewis, who totaled 73-74-69—216, and Tommy Stephenson of Fresno State tied for 40th at 76-73-70—219.
