Australian golfers are 2.4 times more likely to get skin cancer compared to non-golfers

A recent study out of the University of South Australia should serve as a stark warning for all Australian golfers on the risk of skin cancer.

A recent study from researchers in Adelaide has revealed that Australian golfers are 2.4 times more likely to receive a skin cancer diagnosis that the rest of the population.

Channel 9 News covered the new findings and the University of SA also published a press release including comments from lead researcher, Dr Brad Stenner.

“While there are clear health benefits of engaging in golf, this study explored the risks of playing golf as golfers tend to play for four or more hours in the sun, using various sun protection strategies.

“We found that 27% of golfers – or one in four – had been diagnosed with skin cancer, as compared with 7% of the general population.

“So, while sun smart campaigns do exist and are promoted in Australia (especially in summer), it seems they may be missing the mark when it comes to golfers.”

Let this serve as a warning to all of us. Don’t play golf without full protection from the sun.
