Axedale’s Roz getting serious about golf at 80

AT 80 years of age, Roz Briggs decided it was time to get serious about her golf.

Using artificial intelligence to design clubs suited to her, Roz knocked an amazing eight strokes off her handicap in just a year.

‘Most Improved’ is the last trophy the Axedale octogenarian expected to win at her age, but Roz’s achievement made it an easy decision for the Match Committee.

Starting the year on 21, she decided it was time for a new set of clubs and to double her weekly golf from one round to two. The results were instantaneous and the improvement continued until she greeted December with a handicap of just 13.

“It’s one thing to get there, but I can’t really play to it,” she said before winning a golf ball with 37 Stableford points in the club’s Saturday competition.

“She’s playing really good golf,” said Captain Sue O’Connor.

For the record, Roz armed herself with a Callaway Ai Smoke driver, fairway woods, hybrids and 6-iron through to sand wedge.

“They were a bit easier to hit and they went a bit further – it all adds up,” she said.

Surely, we thought, she must have been a low marker in her pomp? “Not really. I was teaching full-time and took up golf in my mid-40s. The lowest I ever got to was 17,” said Roz.

“I put golf on the back burner to support my husband in his 365-day job and just played when I could – played tournaments and pennant where possible and for one year was non-playing captain of Bendigo’s Country Week team.

“It’s amazing the difference it made once I got the new clubs and started playing more frequently.”

Roz was presented with her Most Improved award at a club event to mark the eighth running of the Symes Motors BMW Axedale Pro-Am, won by Zachary Maxwell after local star Lucas Herbert faltered over the last few holes.

The event was Axedale’s second Pro-Am for the year after its April event was named the State’s Best Regional Pro-Am by the pros who played the Victorian circuit.

“Lucas’ LIV schedule means he is able to return home to support events like ours, so we rescheduled to Summer along with Bendigo and Neangar Park golf clubs to create a three-day festival of golf in the region,” said club president Owen Davies.

“All three events got good crowds. The Pro-Am has really put us on the map and word is spreading that we are creating a fantastic golfing experience here at Axedale,” Davies added.
