Besties, birdies and BMW: The ultimate road trip

WHEN my boss offered a “work” assignment involving my girl gang, the brand-new BMW iX2 and golf on the Great Ocean Road, I didn’t just say yes—I did a literal victory lap.

From the moment I pulled up to the curb the commentary from the peanut gallery (my fellow journos) was instant. “I want to ride shotgun, I’m in charge of the playlist!” The interior is unashamedly chic featuring a massive, curved display, ambient lighting, and the upholstery is referred to as “Veganza”.

It sounds like a swanky bar but it’s actually a sustainable leather alternative.   How very on trend.

The BMW iX2, perfect for cruising any coastline.

Being all-electric, the iX2 doesn’t roar, it glides. For a “high rider,” it handles corners with a surprising snappiness. On the winding roads toward Geelong, the dual-motor setup (230 kW of power) meant we could overtake with a silent, effortless zip.

Charging the car was a breeze. While the girls ordered coffee in the village, I pulled into the Anglesea Community Centre for an ultra-rapid charge. Using the Chargefox app I easily accessed Australia’s largest charging network. For convenience back at home, the iX2 also includes a standard portable charging kit.

With a caffeine hit and a full battery we then descended on Anglesea Golf Club with more enthusiasm than skill. The iX2’s powered tailgate was impressive. Despite its sloping coupe roofline, the boot swallowed my clubs, a buggy and our “just-in-case” wardrobe changes with room to spare.

Anglesea golf course is famous for its resident kangaroos, who watched our questionable putting on tough elevated greens with what I can only describe as “judgemental silence.”  There were numerous highlights on this quintessentially Aussie course, including a near birdie we had on the eighth hole and the dozens of kangaroos lazing under the eucalyptus trees lining the fairways.

Our hard work was rewarded with a margarita at the Love House, otherwise known as the Anglesea Surf Life Saving Club. The views are spectacular and it’s the perfect pitstop after a day on the greens.

Between the laughs, the occasional shanked ball and terrible renditions of “Hit me with your best shot”, we realised that 48 hours of golfing and cruising the coastline in an iX2 is the ultimate soul-reset.

Anglesea Golf Club, famous for its well-presented and challenging course, and for its resident kangaroos.

The Verdict:
Drive Slick, punchy and agile for a compact SAV
Interior High-tech luxury with massive digital drive display
Storage Snug boot space but golfer friendly
Charging Seamless and accessible with Chargefox App
Colour Portimao Blue gave it coastal vibes
Golf Tricky elevated greens set against scenic bushland
