Big Swings 2026–2030: The Next Evolution of Golf in Australia

By James Sutherland – CEO, Golf Australia

GOLF in Australia is in an extraordinary position.

We are seeing more people engage with the game than at any point in its history, across traditional clubs, driving ranges, simulators, mini golf and social venues. Golf has become one of the most diverse participation sports in the country, and in many ways, one of the most culturally visible.

But just as importantly, the way people experience golf is changing. And that is why we are launching the next evolution of the national strategy for the game – Big Swings 2026–2030.

This strategy has been shaped by more than 12,000 Australians, extensive consultation across clubs, venues, coaches and volunteers, and collaboration across Golf Australia, the PGA of Australia, WPGA Tour of Australasia, state associations and industry partners. It reflects a shared view of where the game is today and where it you want it to go next.

At its core, the strategy recognises that golf is growing, but golfers and their expectations are also changing. So to harness this momentum the strategy sets three ambitious Big Swings.

EVOLVE

By 2030, all 1,800+ golf courses and facilities in Australia will be supported to evolve the experience for the modern golfing customer.

Golfers today expect flexibility, shorter formats, social connection, and experiences that fit into their lives. This does not diminish tradition, it expands opportunity. EVOLVE is about ensuring every club and venue, in its own way, can remain relevant, welcoming and sustainable for the next generation of golfers.

BELONG

By 2030, 100% of people in the golf community should feel they belong, particularly women and families.

Belonging is the foundation of participation and retention. While more people are coming into the game than ever before, perception still remains a barrier for many. BELONG is about changing that experience, not just at the point of entry, but across the entire journey in the game.

It is about clubs reflecting their communities, more women staying in the game, and families seeing golf as something they can share together.

CONNECT

By 2030, 1 million more people will be connected across golf as they learn, play and follow the game.

Golf today is not a single pathway, it is many different entry points and ways to experience the game. From ranges and simulators, to clubs, competitions and events. CONNECT is about bringing those experiences together, so people are not lost between them.

It means clearer pathways, stronger collaboration across venues, and a more seamless journey from first swing to lifelong participation.

Together, EVOLVE, BELONG and CONNECT represent a shift in how we think about the game, not as separate parts, but as one connected ecosystem.

Because success is no longer defined by how many people try golf. It is defined by how many stay, how many return, and how many feel this game is for them.

Golf delivers something few sports can match, physical health, mental wellbeing, social connection, and a lifelong sense of belonging. Our responsibility is to ensure more people experience those benefits, more often.

That is the opportunity in front of us.

Not just to grow the game, but to grow it in the right way.
