Bizarre ‘downwind’ fart airs during Scottie Scheffler’s swing at The Open

World No.1, Scottie Scheffler, was aware that The Open would throw in some different challenges from the American courses on the PGA Tour.

But it wasn’t the unique links design that he had to negotiate in his first round at Royal Portrush; instead, it was some unexpected and extremely poorly timed flatulence from one of the tens of thousands of fans in Northern Ireland.

As the 2025 PGA Championship winner pulled back his swing for an imperious approach on the 17th hole, a fan, close to the three-time Major champion, ripped an audible fart that broke through Scheffler’s razor-sharp focus.

The revolutionary capability of the on-course microphones at Royal Portrush came into their own with the bowel movements captured in crystal clear audio on the official Open 2025 TV coverage around the world.

In addition to Scheffler’s understandable disbelief, the commentary team, spearheaded by the professional Andrew Cotter, couldn’t help but have a lighthearted chuckle after the most bizarre of events that definitely were not in their script for the first-round broadcast.

The fan-favourite voice, renowned for his multi-sport guile, described the incident in atypical Cotter fashion: “There was so much to say about that shot, the sound off the clubface – extraordinary.”

Talking about atypical responses to an unexpected distraction, Scheffler still managed to stripe the approach, ending incredibly close and hugging the left edge of the 17th hole.

Cotter’s co-commentator added his own piece of wit, cunningly summarising the events in bemusement: “Just a little bit of wind from behind just helped it ease down the green.”

The clip blew up on social media, going viral with many quick to make puns on the incident, as one X user joking that Scheffler was playing “downwind and another claiming he “gripped it and ripped it.”

Despite the interruption, Scheffler was unfazed as he walked off the seventeenth with a birdie to finish the first round with a solid first round of 68 to be three under par.

Scottie Scheffler’s shot at The Open got some help with a “little bit of wind from behind.”

Scheffler showing no nerves in hunt for fourth Major crown

While the fart of the 2025 Open stole the headlines, it was the 29-year-old’s calm demeanour not to let it distract him that was impressive as he yet again showcased his seeming ability to withstand pressure on the golf course.

Before the final Major of the year, the top-ranked star was in the spotlight for his comments stating that succeeding in the sport often isn’t as satisfying as many believe and that it’s not the biggest factor in his life, with his faith and family, understandably, being at the forefront for him.

His comments were interpreted differently by many, but ultimately, they suggest he’s not overly worried about outcomes on the course and this laid-back demeanour may be what makes him so bulletproof on the golf course.

After a solid start and an announcement that he’s content, win or lose, Scheffler remains the hot favourite for The Open 2025 and a fourth Major crown.
