Trevor Fisher Jnr will take a slender lead into the weekend of the Circa Cape Town Open after carding a composed second-round 67 at Royal Cape Golf Club on Friday.
The South African heads the Sunshine Tour and HotelPlanner Tour co-sanctioned event on 11 under par, putting himself in prime position to challenge for a first victory in more than a decade.
Fisher Jnr, winner of the 2015 Africa Open, credited a fortunate equipment switch for his surge up the leaderboard, using a putter borrowed from fellow professional Rupert Kaminsky.
“I took Rupert’s putter on Tuesday and it’s been working unbelievably well,” Fisher Jnr said. “So sorry, Rupert, but you’re not getting it back.
“It’s been a while since I’ve been in this position, and I think I need to get my hands on a trophy again. But I won’t be getting ahead of myself.”
Royal Cape showed more of its teeth in blustery conditions, but Fisher Jnr made a flying start with successive birdies and moved to five under through his first eight holes. While bogeys crept in over the closing stretch, he played the final 10 holes in level par to retain the outright lead.

“I got off to a nice start and was coasting a bit,” he said. “I hit one or two bad shots, but that’s going to happen in the wind. You don’t have to hit the ball perfectly to win a golf tournament – you’ve just got to manage yourself.”
Spain’s Pablo Ereno sits one shot back on 10 under after a steady 68. Playing in South Africa for the first time, Ereno is relishing the opportunity to contend.
“I’m playing on an invitation this week, so my aim is to do my best and try to get some status on a tour,” Ereno said. “It’s exciting to be in contention. This is why I play golf – I love the pressure.”
Fisher Jnr insists his mindset has shifted as he prepares for the weekend, focusing more on enjoyment than expectation.
“I feel a bit more relaxed this week,” he said. “I actually don’t care if I win or lose, which is a nice attitude to have. You can put yourself under too much pressure trying to win tournaments. I’m just trying to enjoy myself, walk easy out there and play the game.”
