College golfer makes amazing recovery after having golf bag blown into pond during tournament

Well, this is something you don’t see every day. A college golfer’s golf bag blew into a pond during a tournament. And she wound up making the save of the year in golf.

Introducing Karla Vazquez Setzer, a University of Maryland freshman who was having a nice round on Monday until her push buggy was swept into a pond on the par-3 second hole (her 11th hole of the day) at the Country Club of Landfall’s Dye course. Suddenly, Vazquez Setzer was in danger of not having any clubs to complete her first round. Thankfully, some volunteers acted fast.

Using bunker rakes, the buggy and bag were pulled from the pond. And while the freshman’s phone and rangefinder didn’t survive, amazingly, all of her clubs except her 9-iron were recovered. Even more amazing, though, was the 20-year-old’s response as detailed by Golfweek’s Beth Ann Nichols.

Despite needing a 9-iron for her approach on her next hole (of course), Vazquez Setzer choked down on an 8-iron and made birdie. In fact, she made three birdies over her next five holes and posted an even-par 72 to open the Landfall Tradition. What a recovery!
