Donald Trump’s new course might have already witnessed one of the worst putts in the history of golf at the Nexo Championship.
Scottish golfer Connor Syme left himself with a tricky putt, on the first hole of his second round, sitting 18 yards from the pin.
His next stroke was downhill and downwind on a fast green and after missing the hole it kept rolling and rolling before ending its lengthy journey in the middle of the fairway – a full 82 yards away from the pin.
Syme, who was just five shot off the lead on level par at the time, eventually finished the hole with an eight and went on to wrap up his second round at seven over par, missing the cut.
Former European Tour player Richard Boxall, watching on Sky Sports, said: “Goodness me. That is unbelievable what I’ve just seen there.” His co-commentator Mark Roe quipped: “He’ll be back on the tee in a minute.”
Boxall responded: “That’s the very silent walk down there. I know it’s fast and downhill but this is unbelievable,” to which Roe interjected: “It’s one of those you don’t want to see again.” He added: “Let’s be fair, some of these shots you’re left with are incredibly tough. It’s hard not to be embarrassed as a player when you do that but it can be done.”
Syme tried to see the funny side of his horror putt, blaming the sport in general.
“My third shot, I didn’t think I played that bad a shot, just got through the wind a little a bit and ended up over the back of the green,” said Syme.
“Obviously you can see from the conditions it was so gusty and I was the wrong side of the hole and a little too much pace and there was nothing to stop it and… yeah it went down the slope. I think my putt went sixty yards or something. Not ideal.
“Pitched it back up and I thought I played quite a nice shot, but it caught the slope and ran over there and I kept getting myself the wrong side of the hole and it was a nightmare.
“From not that bad a third shot to making an eight was pretty sore. But that’s golf sometimes.”
