Jon Rahm's rumoured move to LIV Golf remains shrouded in mystery but Australian Jason Day just hopes the Spaniard makes the right decision for his family.
With social media accounts connected with LIV Golf claiming Rahm travelled to New York yesterday to finalise his reputed $600 million move, Day gave his views on what would be a bombshell decision as he prepared for the Grant Thornton Invitational in Florida.
"I just think when guys get thrown money at them everyone's got a number in the end," the New Zealander told the Palm Beach Post at Tiburon Golf Club, where Leona Maguire partners Lucas Glover in the first mixed-team co-sanctioned event between the PGA TOUR and LPGA Tour.
"I just hope he makes the right decision by him and his family. It doesn't matter to me. Personally, if he leaves it makes my job easier because I don't have to compete against him.
“I just want him to be happy. That's all that matters in the end."
Set to play with fellow Kiwi Lydia Ko, Day went on: "I do like some of the concepts they have. They just haven't quite nailed either the format or the true excitement of what they're trying to accomplish.
"It's still not for me. I know there's rumours about me going. They're totally false. I don't know where these rumours start.”
There’s $1 million for the winning team in the Grant Thornton Invitational, which features a scramble today, foursomes tomorrow and modified fourball on Sunday.
As for LIV, there are still six berths to be filled with three going to the top finishers in this weekend’s 72-hole LIV Golf Promotions event at Abu Dhabi Golf Club.
Close season transfers were announced yesterday with reigning LIV number one Talor Gooch heading from Bubba Watson’s RangeGoats to Brooks Koepka's Smash team.
Matthew Wolff heads in the other direction to the Rangegoats who get Peter Uihlein in return for Harold Varner III, who joins Dustin Johnson’s 4Aces.
Irish amateurs Max Kennedy (21) and Ryan Griffin (23) begin their LIV Golf Promotions quest today but must finish in the top 20 to join the exempt players in round two, with only the top 20 going on to make Sunday’s 36-hole shootout for three LIV Golf berths.
"I played the front nine yesterday and I thought it was very, very tight off the tee,” said Griffin. “You're going to have to drive the ball well and put yourself in position in the fairways because the rough is thick”
At Leopard Creek, Dean Burmester opened with a three-under 69 in his bid to become the first player since Seve Ballesteros in 1986 to win three DP World Tour events in a row at the Alfred Dunhill Championship.
He's just four strokes behind South Africa's Robin "Tiger" Williams, who shot a 65 to lead compatriot Jayden Schaper and Spain's Manuel Elvira by one stroke.
