So, 805 Beer and Devereux Golf are coming out with a collab.
With apologies to the late, great Tom T., let me say this about that.
I like beer.
It makes me a jolly good fellow. It helps me unwind, and sometimes it makes me feel mellow.
I’ve had a long and mostly fruitful relationship with beer. These days, my beer intake is limited to a good non-alcoholic IPA. Back in my youth, however, I did my fair share to boost stockholder value at Anheuser-Busch, Rolling Rock, and Corona.
Therefore, while today’s Medicare Man may not be the right demographic for this collab, it’s right up my 1996 version’s alley.
805 Beer x Devereux Golf: A sudsy collab
805 is a blonde ale brewed by California’s Firestone Walker Brewing Company, founded by Adam Firestone and David Walker in 1996 (sadly, I was stuck in Minnesota at the time). The brewery is located in San Luis Obispo, where the area code is, wait for it…
805.
805 Blonde Ale is a golden, light-bodied brew, which makes it the perfect post-round beverage. Or, if you’re that kind of golfer, it’s a tasty aiming fluid to keep you rolling during the round.
With that kind of vibe, 805 was a golf collab waiting to happen, which brings us to Deveraux.
Devereux Golf is one of those lifestyle apparel companies that mixes traditional golf aesthetics with a contemporary edge. Founded in 2013 by brothers Robert and Will Brunner (and named after their grandmother and avid golfer Deveraeux Brunner), the brand is known for high-quality fabrics, premium details and storytelling-driven collections.
It, too, is a collab waiting to happen.
So, what happens when these two crazy kids get together? They beget the Outlaws of the Fairway Collection. My 1996 self would approve wholeheartedly.
What is in this Outlaws of the Fairways collection?
The lineup is pretty standard overall. However, the distinctive 805/Firestone Walker branding adds a notable edge. According to the press release, the collection is “rooted in shared values, craftsmanship, storytelling and the belief that the best moments are made with good company.”
The collection itself features a pretty awesome fleece pullover with the Firestone Walker logo on the back ($85), as well as a couple of printed polo shirts ($74-$78 – I’m partial to the long-sleeved version), a beer-barrel leather headcover ($54) and a retro-styled badge rope hat ($38). A microfiber logo towel and graphic t-shirt round out the offering.
Considering the cost of higher-end apparel these days, those prices officially qualify as “not bad.”
Do we need another “collab?”
Of course, we don’t, but “need” has nothing to do with it.
That’s the thing about apparel in general and lifestyle collabs in particular: It’s a schtick. For any schtick to stick, however, it needs a story to make you open up the ol’ wallet. This 805 Beer x Devereux Golf Outlaws of the Fairway collection, according to the press info, is about the fun not ending on the 18th green. One good round should inevitably lead to another.
Not exactly a new approach, but one that’s been proven to be effective.
Collabs are meant to be fun and, as we’ve said many times before, golf is a game and games are supposed to be fun. If the style, vibe and attitude of the Outlaws of the Fairway collection make you feel good about buying and wearing it, all the better.
And if it makes you feel happy, well, it’s like beer. For me, whiskey’s too rough, champagne costs too much, and you don’t want to know what vodka used to do to me.
So this little refrain should help me explain as a matter of fact, I like beer.
And collabs.
