England Golf is deeply saddened at the news that our former president, Dr David Marsh MBE, has passed away. David was 88.
Over the course of an extraordinary life, David’s contribution to golf in England and beyond was huge both on the playing and administrative sides of the game.
A fine amateur golfer, David was crowned English Amateur champion in 1964 at Hollinwell and then again six years later when the championship was staged in his native Southport at Royal Birkdale.
In 1967, he became the youngest ever captain of Southport and Ainsdale Golf Club and in 1971 David was a key member of the GB&I Walker Cup team that defeated the USA on the Old Course at St Andrews.
David also went on to captain the GB&I Walker Cup team in 1973 and 1975.
As a respected president of both the Lancashire Union of Golf Clubs in 1985 and then the English Golf Union in 1988, David served the game with distinction.
In 1990, David also accepted the position of captain at The Royal And Ancient Golf Club and continued to work tirelessly on behalf of the game.
Away from golf, David also dedicated time to Everton Football Club – serving as a director and latterly chairman of the Goodison Park side from 1991 to 1994.
Everyone connected with England Golf would like to extend our deepest sympathies to David’s wife Katy and his children, Simon, Nigel and Fiona, and all his family and close friends.
