Du Plessis earns Open spot, Schaper joins him

The number of South Africans playing in The Open has increased with Hennie du Plessis and Jayden Schaper added to the field.

Du Plessis was consoled with his runner-up finish at the BMW International Open with a place at Royal Birkdale in two weeks.

Winner Michael Hollick had already qualified with a good finish in Australia earlier in the year.

The South African could only watch as compatriot Michael Hollick eagled the last to move past him by one spot. It was enough to move him to 10th in the season standings.

He will be joined on the tee sheet for the final Major of the year by Jayden Schaper, Andy Sullivan, Dan Bradbury and Bernd Wiesberger, who finished solo third this week.

Schaper had a day to forget in Germany on Sunday with a +6 round for a T59 finish.

The exemptions were awarded to the leading players not already exempt in the Race to Dubai.
