County Louth’s Gerard Dunne fired a blistering eight-under 64 to claim the first-round lead in the Pharmaher Healthcare-sponsored East of Ireland Championship at Baltray
The school teacher made an eagle and six birdies to lead by two shots from Fota Island’s reigning Irish Boys Open and Munster Strokeplay champion, John Doyle.
Dunne finished tied for fourth in the Irish Amateur Open at Seapoint earlier this month and continued his hot form on familiar terrain.
He birdied the 12th and 18th to turn in 33 before coming home in six-under 31 as he sandwiched an eagle at the second between birdies at the first, third, fourth and fifth.
Doyle made seven birdies in a 66, while Oslo’s Leon Sebastian Hauger was alone in third after a 67.
