English Women’s Stroke Play: Screen and Nobilio head field at Beau Desert

Hannah Screen will look to add a third major title to her CV when she tees it up at this year’s English Women’s Open Amateur Stroke Play Championship.

The England international is one of 105 golfers from 11 countries who will battle it out over 72 holes at Beau Desert Golf Club for the right to succeed Cheshire’s Bel Wardle as champion.

Competitors from Australia, Canada, Denmark, Iceland, Italy, South Africa and Switzerland will join golfers from the four home nations in trying to win the title first played for in 1984.

Screen has already enjoyed major success this summer since graduating from the University of Oklahoma and returning to these shores.

Last month, the 22-year-old won the inaugural English Under 25 Championship staged at Woburn Golf Club.

And she followed that up two weeks ago by helping England win the Women’s and Men’s Home Internationals at Ballyliffin in County Donegal.

Former world number three Alessia Nobilio (pictured above) from Italy will also be a golfer to watch.

The 20-year-old from Milan has enjoyed an outstanding amateur career and is a former Junior Solheim and Ryder Cup competitor as well as a silver medalist at the Junior Olympics.

Beau Desert – a fine example of heathland golf – will provide a tough examination for the women when the competition starts on Thursday.

The competitors will play 18 holes of stroke play on each of the opening two days. The top 60 and ties will then progress to play a further 18 holes on each of the final two days.

Last year Wardle claimed the title for a second time – storming to an impressive victory at Wallasey Golf Club four years after her maiden win at Woodhall Spa.

Previous champions of this event include Solheim Cup and LPGA stars Charley Hull and Jodi Ewart Shadoff as well as current LET player Amy Boulden.
