A thrilling victory in the European Ladies’ Team Championships last summer has earned the England women’s squad the honour of ‘Performance of the Year’.
The announcement was made at tonight’s 2022 England Golf Awards sponsored by adidas – much to the delight of the six-strong team.
Annabell Fuller, Charlotte Heath, Rosie Belsham, Caley McGinty,, Emily Toy and Lianna Bailey (pictured left to right above) entered the event at Royal County Down as underdogs.
A battling performance in the stroke play section saw the women qualify for the knockout stages where they defeated the Czech Republic in the quarter-finals.
The semi-final against Scotland proved to be a thriller – with England storming back from losing the morning foursomes session to win the afternoon singles and progress to the final.
Hot favourites Sweden were the final opponents, but England’s skill and team spirit was never in doubt.
After sharing the points in the morning foursomes, England won three and halved the other two afternoon singles to claim a 5-2 victory.
It was the 11th English win in the tournament’s 62-year history and a sweet moment for a new group of players who gelled superbly under the guidance of coach Steve Robinson and team manager Jennifer Henderson to lift the trophy after a tough week on the Northern Irish links.
Members of the England Golf performance department came together to judge this category and it was the quality of the women’s play combined with the spirit of togetherness shown by the group which earned them the nod over the other strong candidates.
