Fresh from their incredible battle in the English Women’s Amateur Championship final earlier this month, Kirsten Rudgeley and Bel Wardle will be playing partners as the English Women’s Open Stroke Play Championship gets underway on Tuesday.
Australian golfer Rudgeley heads into the competition in high spirits following her 37th-hole victory over Wardle at Moortown two weeks ago but the Prestbury player will be looking to reclaim the title she won back in 2017 when the tournament begins in the picturesque coastal surroundings of Wallasey Golf Club.
Completing the high-quality trio alongside Rudgeley and Wardle is Amelia Williamson, who herself reached the semi final of the English Amateur this month where she was edged out by a stunning comeback from Wardle.
Defending champion Annabel Fuller will not be taking part on Merseyside as she gets ready to join the 2021 Curtis Cup squad but there are plenty of other stellar names among this year’s field.
After helping England to victory in the recent Home Internationals at Woodhall Spa, Rachel Gourley, Olivia Lee, Lottie Woad and Davina Xanh will all be going for individual glory when they take to the course at Wallasey.
Shannon O’Dwyer and Mia Eales-Smith both made it to the last eight of the English Amateur and will look to continue their good form this week while Rosie Bee Kim comes into the tournament on a high following her success at the English Girls’ Under 14 Open Championship at Morecambe earlier this month.
The competition is open to female amateur golfers of all nationalities and will consist of 72 holes of stroke play. One round of 18 holes will be played on Tuesday and Wednesday before the leading 40 players and all those tying for 40th place play a further 36 holes on Thursday to decide who will lift the trophy.
