Georgia PGA Yamaha Atlanta Open

ATLANTA, Ga. Luke James, a PGA of America Director of Golf at Royal Lakes Golf & Country Club, won the 90th playing of the Yamaha Atlanta Open presented by Audi Atlanta and Mizuno USA on Tuesday at The Standard Club in Johns Creek. James shot rounds of 75-66 for a 3-under par total to claim his first Georgia PGA Section major championship.

James teed off number 10 at 12:33 PM, nearly two hours before the leaders on number one. His 6-under 66 included seven birdies against one bogey to put him at 3-under par for the championship. When he finished, the leader at the time was amateur Bo Shuler from McDonough at 7-under. James waited as the field began to come back to him over the next few hours. As the dust settled, four players ended at 3-under to force a playoff. James and Shuler were joined by PGA of America Associate Adam Cooper from Bull Creek Golf Club in Columbus and amateur Preston Topper of Suwanee.

James, Cooper and Topper proceeded to par the first playoff hole with Shuler eliminated with a bogey. Topper found trouble off the tee on the second playoff hole and ended up with a double bogey while the two PGA Professionals moved on with pars. James and Cooper went on to play another four holes with James finally prevailing on the sixth playoff hole. James claimed the $5,000 first place check and earned the first Georgia PGA Wilson Golf Baller Award with the low final round score and picked up a Section logoed football.
