Cal Norton is a Utah native who first picked up golf at age seven. His dad immediately noticed his natural swing and urged him to take the game seriously. It wasn’t until his freshman year of high school that Norton finally listened.
Now, he’s a husband, father of two and scratch golfer.
Without connections on the inside, you’ll never see the first tee at many private golf clubs. Roughly two years ago, Norton and his cousin Dan came up with an idea: What if you could hitchhike your way onto every country club in Utah?
Dan encouraged him to give it a shot. In 2025, Norton finally did.
The Country Club Hitchhiker was born.
When Golf Digest covered his story, they labeled him a “degenerate” in the headline. Personally, I think that’s a silly and dangerous claim that doesn’t give Norton nearly enough credit. I think he’s a genius.
The idea was simple but perfect: Camp outside a private club, hold up a couple of signs like a panhandler and hope someone gets you on. These weren’t just any signs, though. One read “Need a fourth?” Another simply stated “$500 if you beat me.”
In 2025, he gave it a go and went 0-for-3, with no one picking him up due to a myriad of external factors. His attempts in 2026 marked the beginning of a different story.
Like many of us, he was looking for something to look forward to, something to keep him going. He penciled in a half-marathon and ultimately decided he needed to give the Country Club Hitchhiker idea another shot, proving that if at first you don’t succeed, you should certainly try again.
He made it onto Hidden Valley Country Club first and has taken the internet by storm ever since.
Five weeks later, he’s gained more than 100,000 followers on Instagram and compiled a 6-2-2 record playing net-based matches against country club competitors.
While Norton focuses on complying with local rules and regulations, he’s faced some early controversy since starting the series. Some club members and Instagram users have given him a hard time and he even ended up face-to-face with law enforcement earlier this month.
Law enforcement notified him that there had been complaints about him “loitering and panhandling” which is ironic considering he’s just trying to play some good, competitive golf. Luckily, they let him know he wasn’t doing anything wrong and could carry on as long as he followed the local rules.
The final question I had for Norton revolved around his future endeavors.
In his wildest dreams, he hopes to compete in some of the biggest YouTube golf tournaments. The Country Club Hitchhiker isn’t going anywhere, though. In fact, you can expect him to take the concept on the road. If he can get onto nearly every country club in Utah, why wouldn’t he try elsewhere?
He also wanted me to make one thing perfectly clear: nothing is staged. Every interaction is organic. In fact, he has hundreds, if not thousands, of social media users trying to set up matches at their clubs. But he won’t play you unless you pick him up on the curb.
