Golf, sand and a family Christmas: Alma Resort raises the bar

The KN Golf Links, within easy reach of the Alma Resort Cam Ranh.

THERE’S a stretch of coastline in south-central Vietnam that Australian golfers are only just discovering — and once played, they’ll wonder why it took this long.

Cam Ranh, on Vietnam’s Long Beach (Bai Dai), has quietly become one of Asia’s most compelling golf-and-beach destinations, anchored by four championship courses and a resort built for exactly this kind of trip: golf by day, beachfront luxury by night, with the chance to become immersed in the local culture that surrounds Alma along the way.

a Top 5 finisher for Best Resort in Southeast Asia at this year’s Travel + Leisure World’s Best Awards, Alma Resort Cam Ranh sits right on that stretch of sand – within easy reach of KN Golf Links and Diamond Bay Golf & Villas which are both a short drive away, with Vinpearl Golf Club and Anara Binh Tien Golf Club also in striking distance for those keen to mix up their rounds.

Back at the resort, there’s room to unwind after 18 holes. Alma’s entry-level accommodation, the One-Bedroom Suite, is a spacious 70 square metres, among the largest entry-level rooms in the region, and villa guests get their own private pool, ideal for cooling off between rounds.

KN Golf Links plays as a links-style layout that leans hard into the coastal wind, while Diamond Bay Golf & Villas is carved into rolling terrain with sea views from several holes. Both sit close to the resort and for golfers who want to keep their swing sharp without leaving the property, Alma also has an indoor golf simulator and an 18-hole mini-golf course winding through its grounds.

The beautiful Alma Resort.

Recovery is well catered, with Le Spa offering a full menu of massage and body treatments, and across Alma’s several restaurants – from fresh seafood to international favourites – there’s enough variety to avoid eating the same meal twice over a multi-night stay.

Alma has been voted Best Family Resort in Vietnam at Australia’s own Holidays with Kids Readers’ Choice Awards for several years running, also making it a resort that works well as a family Christmas escape, not just a golf trip. Alma’s beachfront setting, water park and kids’ club give non-golfing partners and children plenty to do while golfers are out on the course, and the resort runs a full festive calendar over the holidays.

Cam Ranh isn’t yet on every Australian golfer’s radar the way Danang or Phuket are, which is part of the appeal right now. Cam Ranh International Airport is well served from Australia, with one-stop connections from Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane via hubs like Singapore or Ho Chi Minh City, and total travel times comfortably under 14 hours – closer than the map suggests.

With courses this good and still relatively uncrowded, there’s a genuine case for getting there before the secret’s fully out.
