Rasmus Højgaard sent a strong message to the field after a blistering eight-under-par 64 lifted him into the lead at the Danish Golf Championship.
The home favourite, starting the day two shots off the pace, matched Marco Penge’s course record at Furesø Golf Klub to move to 12-under and two clear of the Englishman.
Ranked 79th in the Official World Golf Ranking, the 24-year-old showed his class with a sensational stretch around the turn. “To be honest, I didn’t feel like I was attacking that much,” he said. “I was just striking the ball well, putting it in play and giving myself chances. Towards the end of the first nine I made a birdie and an eagle, and that really got the round going.”
After six opening pars, the defending champion birdied the 16th before holing a three-footer for eagle at the par-five 18th. Four straight birdies followed from the first, with another at the sixth briefly giving him a six-shot cushion. A dropped shot at the eighth was the only blemish on an otherwise brilliant card.
Penge, flawless in his opening 64, fought back from a mixed second round. The Englishman made three early birdies but dropped his first shot of the week at the ninth. He clawed back to 10-under with gains at 10 and 16, only to give one back at the 17th before birdieing the last to finish two behind Højgaard at the halfway mark.
Canada’s Aaron Cockerill sits third at seven-under after a 69, highlighted by an eagle at the last.
Further down, Copenhagen’s Niklas Norgaard shares fourth on six-under with Austria’s Maximilian Steinlechner and France’s Adrien Saddier. A group on five-under includes Dane Jeppe Kristian Andersen, Sweden’s Mikael Lindberg, Spain’s Alfredo Garcia-Heredia, Australia’s Jason Scrivener and Italy’s Gregorio De Leo.
De Leo provided one of the day’s highlights with the first ace of the tournament – and the 15th of the 2025 DP World Tour season – when he holed a seven-iron from 181 yards at the par-three fifth.
