I Built My Own PING S259 Wedge. Here’s What the Custom Program Actually Lets You Do

If you are looking to add a splash of color and custom specs to the bottom of your bag, PING’s s259 Wedge Customizer should be on your radar.

I understand that the concept of customized clubs does not resonate with all golfers.

Some folks are perfectly satisfied with off-the-rack looks. These players see no value associated with the added cost for creating customized wedges.

If that sounds like you, then thanks for dropping by.

However, I would still suggest that you check out the PING s259 wedges. The stock wedges are available in multiple loft/bounce/grind configurations. You’ll easily find one that fits your game.

History suggests the s259 wedges will probably pack performance. The previous version, the PING s159, was the Most Wanted Wedge of 2024. This year’s wedge testing is ongoing but I fully expect the s259 to follow in the footsteps of the s159.

Let’s get back to the custom gear topic. If you are interested in creating a custom wedge, you’ll dig what PING is offering this time around. You’ll see some classic PING imagery and a brand-new way to incorporate some color.

The s259 ordering process is similar to previous programs

The ordering process for your customized PING s259 wedge is the same as it was for the s159. You use PING’s online design interface to create your wedge build and then you take it into your local shop for ordering.

While going to the shop does add a step to the purchase process, it ensures your wedge will be built to your play specifications. It also removes the possibility of a 2 a.m. impulse wedge purchase.

I think that is a good thing …

A la carte pricing

The final cost of your customized s259 will depend upon the options you select. You start with the stock wedge price ($217 MSRP w/steel shaft, $232 w/graphite). From there, what you select determines the final price.

  • Custom Graphics = add $15.75
  • Custom Standard Stamping = add $15.00
  • Custom Scattered Stamping = add $25.00
  • Custom Paint Fill = add $15.00
  • Custom Colored Ferrule = N/C

All in, you could be adding about $70 a wedge. But if all you want is custom paint, that’s only $15.

I think this is a great way for PING to price these wedges as opposed to a flat price for a custom, regardless of the options selected.

You can also select non-stock shaft and grip options but some of those options will bump up the price as well.

Dave’s custom PING s259 wedge build plan

For this project, I deviated from my previous customization plans. When I built custom versions of the PING s159 and Glide Forged Pro wedges, I built individual wedges, each showcasing an aspect of the customization program.

This time, I decided to build a set of wedges, carrying the aesthetic choices through all three clubs.

Not only did I want them to match but I was curious if having them match would make it annoying when trying to grab the right wedge from the bag.

Since most folks play multiple wedges of the same make and model, I wasn’t too worried about not being able to grab the right wedge.

Familiar options and a fun new one

As with their previous Wedge Customizer programs, PING’s s259 custom program allows you to choose the colors, stamps and graphics.

You start the process by selecting the overall finish of your wedge (Chrome or Midnight). After that, you enter the play aspects of your wedge by selecting the dexterity, loft, bounce, lie and length parameters.

Shaft and grip choices are made later but making the most of the playability choices before the aesthetic choices is a very PING-like process. As an engineering-driven company, performance comes before prettiness.

Once you have a playable wedge, then you can play with the looks.

New to the s259 Wedge Customizer is the option to choose one of six ferrule colors. You can choose basic black or go with something bolder like orange, green or purple. You may have noticed in the price list above that there is no charge for this option.

Dave’s PING s269 custom wedge set

Although a continuity of purple and black was the overall plan, I did mix up the graphics and stamps to make each wedge stand out a bit from the others.

Overall, I am very pleased with the final product. Visually, I appreciate the uniformity of the look. The little tweaks to the design, and the different loft numbers, add enough variation that I grab the wedge that I am trying to grab.

The computer-versus-final product comparison was solid with the exception of the stamp and graphic location on the 54-degree. On the rendering, the bird stamp is well away from the target graphic. On the actual wedge, the bird is sitting on the target.

      </div>

          <div></div>
          <div></div>
      </div>

I like the symbolism of the bird being the target but the overlap was unexpected.

Outside of that, I am very pleased with how these custom s259 wedges turned out. If you have the inclination, and the funds, you can create a wedge that you’ll like seeing in your bag.

If others don’t understand why you spent the extra money on customization, that’s OK. It’s a personal preference. You get to like what you like and spend money on the things you like.

Regardless of color scheme, they will support the purchase when you knock it close with your new s259 custom wedge.

These are still PING wedges, after all.
