I Finally Found Something That Works For My Golf-Induced Back Pain

You’re not here to listen to me whine and moan about back problems.

We all have ’em. Or, at least, it seems most golfers have, at one time or another, dealt with ailments of the spine.

I, like you reading this, have not been spared by the golf gods when it comes to back pain, specifically, lower back pain that radiates down my legs. And, in some instances, after a long session of hitting driver, upper back pain.

It’s why I’ve written about various products from brands like Hyperice which offer mobile solutions to stubborn muscle soreness.

This is not that.

This accessory doesn’t fit in your golf bag. Heck, it may barely fit in your car. But I’ve been using it for the last two weeks and it’s been a legitimate godsend for my sore back.

Bird is the word

Enter Chirp. They’ve been around for a while but I finally tried their Contour product, a decompression and massage table/pad. And from the moment I unboxed the 22-pound behemoth, I’ve never felt more relaxed.

It ain’t cheap. But what price would you put on pain-free golf? Generally, after a few months of golf (or a few days of beating balls at the office), I’m stuck going to the chiro for an adjustment to get everything feeling right again.

With the Chirp Contour, I’ve been able to achieve the same effect at home in a matter of 20 minutes or so. It’s much more than your basic massage pad that you pick up from the local Ross. This thing is packed with helpful features that I’ve taken full advantage of including;

  • Two levels of heat
  • Three interchangeable massage rollers (I’ve been using the Deep Tissue one, recently but all three feel great)
  • Three distinct massage modes (roll, decompression, targeted)
  • Three preset massage sessions (warm-up, recovery, relax)
  • Height-adjustable neck massager

My experience

I’ve done darn near everything you can do with this fancy contraption. Here’s what I’ve learned in my two weeks with the Chirp Contour.

  1. Heat is a must. The two levels of heat are fantastic for loosening up tight muscles. I turn this feature on anytime I use the Chirp.
  2. The ability to target any portion of your back is necessary. Using the included remote to target one specific area in my upper or lower back is much better than only having a “one-size fits all” approach to massage.
  3. Start with the soft roller. The contour roller and deep tissue roller can be a little painful if you aren’t used to this type of massage.
  4. It’s easy to swap and store the different rollers. Simply open the bottom of the device, swap them out and store them for the next time.
  5. Use it before your round, after your round and before bed. Seriously, it feels so dang good.

My only gripe …

The one thing I would change is probably the one thing that cannot change: portability. A device like this is hard to store. It doesn’t fold, it weighs a lot and moving it from floor to floor on my three-level townhome is a chore.

That is to say that once you place it somewhere, it’s probably best to keep it there. Unfortunately, it’s not something you’ll be able to travel with or bring to the course with you, like a massage gun. That said, I’ve yet to find a product that does a better job at relieving my back pain than this does.
