Inside Donald Trump’s golf bag in Scotland as he launches new MacLeod Course

U.S. President Donald Trump has returned to Scotland this weekend, drawing global attention and a mass-scale security operation.

The visit has garnered widespread media attention, as Trump is not in the United Kingdom for a state visit, but instead for a round of golf and to open a new 18-hole course.

Air Force 1 touched down in Scotland on Friday evening, and Trump headed straight for his luxury Turnberry Resort, where he played multiple rounds under high security at one of the many golf courses that he owns.

It’s been timed to mark the official opening of the MacLeod course, named after his mother, at Trump International Golf Links.

Police helicopters circled, and protestors have marched around the country since his arrival, with the cost of military searches before his arrival and at least a 20-vehicle entourage reportedly being the most costly operation in Scotland since the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II.

And while his official United Kingdom state visit isn’t until September, the U.S President is known for his love of the sport and the country where it was born.

Dressed in his signature ‘USA’ cap alongside his sons and USA ambassadors, Trump waved at photographers as he made his way around the golf course in South Ayrshire.

Trump claims a 2.8 handicap and is known to use a range of special edition golf clubs in his bag.

What’s in the bag for Donald Trump’s latest Scottish golf trip?

Driver: TaylorMade Presidential Qi10 custom build driver 10.5°

Trump’s driver is one of TaylorMade’s most recent releases and a favourite for those seeking a balance of speed, forgiveness and feel.

He plays a limited edition Qi10 that features a wooden effect and an aftermarket Graphite Tour AD shaft to hail his appreciation of the history and Scottish heritage of the sport.

Woods: TaylorMade Qi10 3, 5, 7 & 9 wood

The President plays with four woods, and many believe this is to ensure he has a long enough club to reach testing, long par 3s that are common on links golf courses.

In particular, the 9 wood will provide him with an easier launch and a more ideal shot height, which can become more difficult as you get older.

Irons: TaylorMade Stealth iron set (6-PW)

Trump’s limited selection of irons at first may look odd, but it seems there is method to the madness with the President building his game around accuracy rather than power.

He smartly uses game improvement irons with an emphasis on ball speed and, importantly, forgiveness. Skipping the long irons is commonplace with older golfers, and Trump’s approach is no different.

Wedges: Titleist Vokey SM10 wedges

Trump uses the most popular Vokey wedges on tour, favouring some of the latest tech in his golf bag setup, which are famous for their spin and true feel.

The loft of Trump’s wedges is unknown, but many expect he uses the classic 52°, 56° and 60° combination for ultimate versatility while chipping.

Putter: Scotty Cameron Newport putter

The golf fanatic clearly has a deep connection with the heritage of golf, and his Scotty Cameron Newport putter is a timeless classic.

He’s used the model for years, which suggests he enjoys the club’s performance and doesn’t feel the need to upgrade to the most recent models.

Ball: Titleist Pro V1

Titleist’s premium golf ball is the gold standard of ball options, with it being the most popular due to its all-around performance and feel.

Verdict: While Trump has been renowned for claiming to be a multiple club championship winner and scratch golfer, his golf bag setup is much more humble than his outlandish media comments may suggest.

He’s clearly a percentage golfer, and his club selection conveys that he knows his limits and that limiting mistakes and hitting fairways will save him strokes as opposed to big hitting.

His bag contains an interesting balance of implementing the latest tech while staying true to an older release if it’s providing him the desired results.

The President’s knowledge of his courses and fairway wood heavy setup with forgiving irons highlight his smart approach to playing a sport that will quickly humble you in the harshest possible ways.
