A readiness framework for Australian clubs
Robotic mowing has moved from novelty to genuine option for Australian golf courses, but most of the conversation around it jumps straight to the sell: cost savings, labour relief, better turf. What’s had less airtime is the step before any of that — how a course actually works out whether it’s ready, and what the transition looks like in practice.
Terrain: what “unsuitable” means today
Five years ago, steep slopes and tight, obstacle-heavy zones were reasonable grounds to write off autonomous mowing for large parts of a course. That’s changed. Current commercial platforms, including Husqvarna’s CEORA and Automower ranges, can handle inclines up to 70 percent (around 35 degrees) and cut with accuracy down to 10–20mm, which reframes what counts as viable terrain. Some clubs are moving straight into fairway mowing, but many first-time adopters are taking a more cautious path — trialling driving ranges, rough areas and the grounds around the clubhouse first, then expanding into fairway zones once the technology has proven itself on-site.
Infrastructure: the part clubs underestimate
The single biggest cause of delayed installations isn’t the mower — it’s the groundwork around it. Charging station placement, reference station siting, power access (mains or solar), and making sure buildings or tree cover don’t block satellite signal all need to be worked through before a club commits, even if a full rollout is still some way off. Clubs planning any course redevelopment or renovation are increasingly building this infrastructure in from the start, rather than retrofitting it later.

Workforce: shift, not shrink
The more useful question isn’t “will this replace staff” but “how do roles change.” That’s a live issue in Australian turf management right now. John Neylan, Senior Turf Agronomist at SPORTENG — who has advised the AFL, Australian Golf Union and the Sydney Olympics over a three-decade career — points to a workforce under real pressure: “Turf management is facing a range of challenges: labour shortages, low wages, climate pressures, and reduced education funding. These challenges make it increasingly difficult to maintain high-quality playing surfaces.”
Jake Gibbs, Director of Grounds at Elanora Country Club, sees the same strain day to day: “Across the industry, many teams are working with limited resources but still holding themselves to incredibly high standards. There’s a real sense of pride in the work but maintaining that level of quality and consistency with smaller teams is a constant challenge.”
Automating routine mowing doesn’t remove the need for skilled staff — it redirects their time toward turf health, irrigation and the detail work that actually shapes how a course presents.
The numbers, not the pitch
Rather than generic percentages, it’s worth looking at what’s already happened locally. Woodford Golf Club, after trialling autonomous mowers on its fairways, now saves around 20 hours of labour a week and roughly $5,000 a year in fuel. Oatlands Golf Club has cut its diesel use by about 60 litres a week since introducing robotic mowers across seven fairways, with members noting the improved consistency of lies. These are course-specific figures, and every club’s numbers will differ — but they’re a more useful benchmark than a vendor’s headline claim.
Where this leaves clubs
Readiness isn’t a single yes-or-no decision. It’s an assessment across terrain, infrastructure, staffing and expected return — one most clubs can start working through well before they’re ready to buy anything. For committees fielding the “should we look at this” question, that’s the conversation worth having first.
British Masters tees off with Husqvarna support
SEVEN Husqvarna CEORA® robotic mowers helped to prepare The Brabazon ahead of the Husqvarna British Masters hosted by Sir Nick Faldo, before an expanded fleet of 15 CEORA units provided overnight support during tournament week.
Husqvarna technology played a crucial role in preparing The Belfry’s iconic Brabazon Course as the venue was building towards the arrival of the DP World Tour’s leading players for the playing of the iconic championship late last month.
Contested at The Belfry Hotel & Resort, Sutton Coldfield, England, the British Masters first teed off in 1946 and boasts a roll call of legendary winners including Australian Peter Thomson, Tony Jacklin, Bernhard Langer, Ian Woosnam, Seve Ballesteros, Sir Nick Faldo and Colin Montgomerie.
Husqvarna became Title Partner of the British Masters through a multi-year agreement announced earlier this year.
The company is also the Official Robotic Mowing Partner of the DP World Tour, building on a partnership that has already demonstrated autonomous mowing technology on some of golf’s most prominent stages.
With this elevated status, Husqvarna has been able to showcase its range of products and services across DP World Tour channels throughout the season.
In the build-up to the British Masters, seven Husqvarna CEORA robotic mowers maintained the fairways of the four-time Ryder Cup venue, working consistently across the course to help produce the exacting standards required for elite tournament golf.
