BATH, Ont. – Jack Guo of West Vancouver, B.C. and Kaeleigh Chung of Richmond Hill, Ont. both secured wins at the third playing of the Canadian U15 Championship, presented by BDO, at Loyalist Country Club in Bath, Ont. on Wednesday.
Guo started his final round with a three-shot lead over William Chen of Toronto, Ont. Through nine holes in the final round Guo had pulled ahead by four strokes, until Erik Petersen of Okotoks, Alta. grabbed a share of the lead on hole no. 15. The co-lead was short lived as Guo recorded back-to-back birdies on nos. 16 and 17 to pull ahead. Guo
Guo finished the tournament at 11-under with rounds of 65-68-133 carding 14 birdies to secure his first Canadian national championship victory by three over Petersen.
Chung entered the final round four shots back of the leader Grace (HyunYi) Kim of Oakville, Ont. and fired a bogey free 8-under 64 with two eagles and four birdies to win the championship by five strokes at 6-under. Chung finished the tournament with rounds of 74-64-158 carding two eagles and seven birdies through two rounds.
This is Chung’s first national championship win but her third win as an amateur, also winning the 2024 Notah Begay III Junior Golf National Championship and the FCG National Championship.
Along with the Canadian U15 Championship trophy, Guo has earned an exemption into the 2027 Canadian Junior Boys Championship and the 2027 Canadian U15 Championship if eligible. Chung has also earned an exemption into the 2027 Canadian Junior Girls Championship and the 2027 Canadian U15 Championship if eligible.
Established in 2024 to advance the development of Canadian junior golfers, the national championship offers players the opportunity to gain invaluable experience as part of a talented field and compete at a high level. As part of the festivities, a half-day educational summit will take place on Friday and focus on a range of topics including sport psychology, physical training for young golfers, parenting high-performance athletes, and talent development research. The session is available for players, coaches and parents and will take place on the course between 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. local time.
