Jason Day has shown off his skills in every department of the game during a brilliant career.
The Aussie is a former World No.1, a Major winner and has racked up no less than 13 PGA Tour titles – the first in 2010 and the latest in 2023.
But while many top players forge a reputation for being elite drivers or stellar iron players, the Aussie still insists the shortest club in his bag is the one he regards as the most important.
Speaking at last week’s Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines, the 2015 PGA Championship winner was asked what is his favourite club of all time and why.
Day didn’t hesitate. “My putter by far because that’s the thing that I’m known for.
“It’s not the sexiest thing, you know what I mean? It’s not like hitting a drive like a Rory McIlroy or anything like that, but you hit a clutch putt down the stretch when you need to, nothing better than that because you need it.
“When all else fails and you have the putter going, it’s the thing that’s going to keep you in the game. That’s the reason why I love putting the most.”
And does he have a favourite model?
“I’ve changed a few times over the years, but my Ghost Spider putter,” Day revealed. “I’ve always used that since 2011.
“The models have slightly changed over time, but typically I go back to the one. It’s a red putter. I kind of had the most success with it.”
Day has tinkered with mallet putters in the last few seasons but, like many golfers, has gravitated back to the one he associates most with that winning feeling.
The putter is the TaylorMade Ghost Spider and Day has used the red, black and white versions.
In 2015, Day won five times, including the PGA Championship, with the black edition.
And it’s the visuals that give him most comfort. “I won quite a few tournaments with that putter, so to have the putter in the bag was nice, to be able to look down and see that.”
But now the dilemma.
Day has played three times so far in 2025 and already has a top-three finish after taking third place in The American Express at La Quinta.
But the 37-year-old has recorded negative Strokes Gained: Putting figures in all three of them.
Of the 70 players who made the cut at Torrey Pines last week, Day ranked a lowly 66th for SGP.
Ahead of the event, Day had noted: “I haven’t putted good the last few tournaments in a row.”
So, does he keep faith in his trusty putter ahead of this week’s Pebble Beach Pro-Am where he has nine top 10 finishes down the years?
Or is time to tinker again?
