MEMPHIS, Tn. — The Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels started their week at the Bill Cochran Collegiate and finished the two-day event with a decisive win under their belt. While the players have been no strangers to the top of the scoreboard, their performance at the Colonial Country Club landed them in first overall for the first time this spring and second time of the 2024-25 campaign.
Sam Karman (76-77-71) landed in fourth overall, just four strokes off the lead. Despite battling illness Monday night into Tuesday, he finished the event off strong, ending the final round with birdies on 17 and 18.
Karman’s day one also ended strong as he shot a 1 under 71 on Monday’s second round, highlighted by five birdies. Karman also left his mark on the green by taking the lead in the field for birdies (12).
Ryan Dunn (78-74-74) and Corbin Scott (78-74-74) in seventh, Jackson Hiller (76-75-77) in 13th, and Diego Passos (73-81-81) in 41st rounded out the scoring for the Stormy Petrels.
“We have had some gutty performances over the long and illustrious history of the golf program, and Sam’s effort today despite having a bad stomach virus would be one of the best,” commented head coach Jim Owen. “Where many other players would call it a sick day and rest for the next event, Sam stuck it out and gave us an incredible round.”
Karman was the only player under par on Tuesday, shooting the low round by two strokes.
Dunn finished on a high note during the tournament’s third round with a total of three birdies and secured fourth in the field for par 3’s. Scott also posted his best round on Tuesday, securing three birdies and a nearly bogey free round across 14 holes. Hiller soared high during the second round with three birdies and a bogey-free stretch across nine holes and earned second in the field for par 5’s.
As a team, Oglethorpe’s win included rounds of 381-381-377, and the team landed in the top three for nearly every scoring category. These placements included first in the field for par 3’s, par 4’s, and birdies as well as second in the field for par 5’s.
