MEMPHIS, Ten. — After posting back-to-back tournament victories in their two most recent tournaments, the No. 3 Oglethorpe men’s golf team continued its stretch of high-level play with a runner-up finish Monday and Tuesday at the Cochran Collegiate. The event was held at Colonial Country Club and hosted by Rhodes.
It was another elite field with the top seven finishing teams all in the national top 25. No. 8 Huntingdon won the event while the next six teams finished within 11 strokes of one another.
Junior Beck Lewis and freshman Jackson Hiller led the No. 3 Stormy Petrels in T12 overall at 7 over par across the 54-hole event. Lewis went 76-75-72 with one of the best rounds of Tuesday while Hiller shot 72-75-76.
Sam Karman, who led the field after round one, finished next at T18 with scores of 71-75-79. Michael O’Sullivan finished T25 with scores of 74-76-77, and Ryan Dunn finished T31 with 77-76-76.
Karman’s 71 and Oglethorpe’s 293 on round one had the Stormy petrels in the lead with Karman atop the individual leaderboard after 18 holes. Huntingdon roared into the lead with a 288 on round two and held that lead with a 292 on round three. Oglethorpe’s three-day scores went 293-301-301.
This was good for second place by four strokes.
Tournament Notes
- Oglethorpe led the field in par 3 scoring at 7 over and ranks second in the field in pars with 171, one short of the lead.
- Oglethorpe ranked third in par 4 scoring, fifth in birdies and sixth in par 5 scoring.
- Lewis fired event par on the par 4’s to finish runner-up in that category by one stroke.
- Hiller and Karman each finished third in par 3 scoring and par 5 scoring, respectively. Hiller shot 1 under on the par 3’s while Karman shot 4 under on the par 5’s. O’Sullivan narrowly trailed Hiller on par 3 scoring at 1 over, tied for ninth.
- Lewis and Hiller led Oglethorpe in total pars with 38, ranking only three off the lead in sixth.
- Karman led with eight birdies, followed by O’Sullivan with seven and Dunn and Hiller each with six.
Up Next
Oglethorpe’s B team will travel to nearby Emory this upcoming weekend for the Emory Spring Invitational. After that, the Stormy Petrels will make their appearance at the SAA Championships, looking to capture their sixth SAA title since the formation of the league in 2013.
