LIV Golf moves to 72-hole format

LIV Golf has confirmed that all events will be played over 72 holes from 2026, marking a major evolution for the league as it continues to expand globally.

Since its inception, LIV has featured a 54-hole format, with tournaments running from Friday to Sunday.

From 2026, events will be played across four days – generally from Thursday to Sunday – while maintaining the same team and individual competition format, and the shotgun starts that define the league’s fast-paced style.

“As we enter our fourth season as a league, the move to 72 holes marks a pivotal new chapter for LIV Golf,” said CEO Scott O’Neil. “It strengthens our league, challenges our elite players, and delivers more of the world-class golf, energy, innovation and access that our global audience wants.

“We’re seeing momentum and traction from Hong Kong to Adelaide to Indianapolis, and that heightened interest opens the door to add another day of golf while benefiting fans, players, marketing partners and broadcasters.”

Each regular season event will now be decided over four rounds of stroke play, with team results determined by the cumulative scores of individual players. The format for the season-ending Team Championship will be announced at a later date.

“This is a win for the league and the players,” said Jon Rahm, Legion XIII captain and two-time reigning individual champion. “We’re competitors to the core and want every opportunity to test ourselves. Moving to 72 holes strengthens the competition and delivers more of what the fans want.”

Bryson DeChambeau, Crushers GC captain, welcomed the change.

“Everyone wants to see the best players in the world compete, especially in the Majors, and for the good of the game, we need a path forward. By moving to 72 holes, LIV is taking a proactive step to align with the historic format recognised globally.”

Torque GC captain Joaquin Niemann added: “Moving to 72 holes means more competition, which is what we want. More time on course means more opportunity – for visibility, performance, and for the fans.”

Four-time Major champion Dustin Johnson, captain of 4Aces GC, said the change makes LIV Golf feel even closer to the sport’s biggest tournaments.

“Playing 72 holes just feels more like the big tournaments we’ve all grown up playing. It gives the best players a chance to rise to the top, and it’s great for both the fans and the players.”
