LIV Golf SA closing in on sell-out

More than 72,000 tickets have already been sold for LIV Golf South Africa at Steyn City.

Organisers believe the event could sell out at around 90,000 spectators, underlining the growing appetite for LIV Golf in markets outside the United States and reinforcing South Africa’s importance to the league’s long-term plans.

South African Major winner Louis Oosthuizen believes the team-based model is central to LIV Golf’s appeal and sustainability.

“This is going to be what makes LIV eventually the biggest thing,” Oosthuizen, captain of the Southern Guards, told the Sunday Times. “I can see it becoming all-team down the road.”

LIV Golf’s format – which combines shorter rounds through shotgun starts with live music, concerts and fan villages – has been designed to broaden the game’s audience, with organisers saying they are attracting younger fans and more women to tournaments.

Southern Guards general manager Richard Glover says the commercial momentum behind LIV is becoming increasingly clear.

“I can actually see a pathway to sustainability because of the increasing success of LIV events, particularly outside of the US,” Glover said. “There’s huge demand for this type of golf globally, and we’re now seeing blue-chip sponsors coming in at both event and team level.”

The Steyn City event will feature a star-studded field, including Bryson DeChambeau, Jon Rahm, Dustin Johnson, Cameron Smith, Phil Mickelson and Sergio Garcia, alongside South Africans Oosthuizen, Charl Schwartzel and Dean Burmester. Collectively, the field boasts more than 20 Major championship titles.
