Louis Oosthuizen on LIV Golf speculation: “Nothing new”

Louis Oosthuizen has shrugged off the negative publicity surrounding LIV Golf as he looks towards a bright future with the league.

The captain of the all Southern African quartert was quizzed on his thoughts following a tumultous two weeks.

“I mean, from starting five years ago, we’ve always been on the bad side of media. We’ve always been there to take all the hard punches and everyone telling us we’re done and dusted every few months or something,” said Oosthuizen.

“So it’s nothing new for us to go through all of this …

“As players, we are very positive, we are very happy with Scott [O’Neil], leading us going forward and, you know, we’re excited for the 2027 season as Southern Guards.

“We can’t wait to start new relationships with new sponsors and just make next year even bigger and better. So the momentum continues for the team looking into 2027 and beyond.”

Asked on what Oosthuizen’s role in five years could look like, the 43-year-old remains committed to confirming the Southern Guards as the de facto national golf team,

“Yeah, five years from now, um, I would I want to be involved still,” he said.

“I don’t think I’ll be playing still. I’d probably be involved somehow. don’t know how … maybe as the non-playing captain.

Oosthuizen wants young local golfers to aspire to take his place on the team one day.

“I would love, you know, for any young South African good prodigy coming through that wants to become a Southern Guard and to be on the team.

“You know, obviously, Dean and Branden are the youngsters in our team, I don’t know where me and Charl would be in five years’ time, but you know, I think the brand can just and the team can just get bigger and better, especially in South Africa and the goal is to be known as the South African golf team.

“You know, like people look at the Springboks, the Proteas and Bafana Bafana … we want to be the South Africa as the golf team, and hopefully, you know, we can encourage youngsters to want to be a Southern Guard team member one day.”
