MacIntyre fires 64 to stay atop BMW Championship

Robert MacIntyre continued his blistering form with a bogey-free six-under-par 64 on Friday to take a commanding five-stroke lead after the second round of the BMW Championship.

The 29-year-old Scot, who shot a career-low 62 in Thursday’s opening round, reached 14-under-par 126 at Caves Valley in Baltimore.

His round included six birdies, highlighted by a 28-foot putt at the 14th and a tap-in birdie at the par-five 16th after a massive three-wood approach.

“Great two days’ work,” MacIntyre said. “I feel like my iron play has been top drawer this week. If you leave yourself in the right positions, you can be aggressive with the putts.”

World No 1 Scottie Scheffler sits second on nine-under 131 after a bogey-free 65, his 13th of the season.

“Five shots back going into the weekend is not too bad with the way Bob is playing,” said Scheffler.

Ludvig Aberg carded a 64 to sit third on eight-under 132, one ahead of Japan’s Hideki Matsuyama, who posted a bogey-free 64 of his own. England’s Tommy Fleetwood, alongside Americans Maverick McNealy and Michael Kim, is a further stroke back on seven-under 134.

MacIntyre, who finished runner-up at the US Open in June, has already secured two PGA Tour titles – the 2024 Canadian and Scottish Opens. His projected rise from 20th to third in the FedEx Cup standings leaves him in prime position to qualify for next week’s Tour Championship in Atlanta.

Fleetwood slipped back after a one-under 69, while Rory McIlroy posted a 66 to sit 10 strokes behind the leader.

“I just want to play a good weekend and feel a little bit better about my game going into the Tour Championship,” McIlroy said.
