Leona Maguire showed all her fighting qualities when she turned a possible missed cut into a top 25 finish in the Chevron Championship in Texas.
The world number 15 was five-over par with just seven holes of Friday’s second round to go but rallied to shoot 69 make the one-over-par cut on the mark, then added rounds of 70 and 73 to finish on level par at The Club at Carlton Woods.
“I’d have taken it on Friday afternoon standing on the 10th tee box,” Maguire said in The Woodlands last night. “It would’ve been nice to finish a little better today but overall a solid week.”
While she was tied 23rd in the clubhouse on level after sandwiching birdies at the fifth and eighth between bogeys at the fourth, 11th and 16th, the Solheim Cup star admitted she wasn’t at her best.
“My approach shots weren’t good enough this week,” she said. “It was tricky, I made a lot of good up and downs, but it was going to be hard to shoot low, hitting it the way I was into the greens so I need to tighten that up.
“The course is playing tough today. I think today is by far the toughest set up. I had three wood into two of the greens today.
“The pins are tucked. It’s hard to get close to the pins. And I didn’t quite hole the putts I needed to hole today to make a bit of a move, but it was a solid week overall.”
