Sunday’s winner of the 90th Masters will receive a record $4.5 million top prize from a major record $22.5 million purse, Augusta National Golf Club announced on Saturday.
While other events pay more money, the major mark had been $21.5 million from last year’s US Open, where American J.J. Spaun took the title for $4.3 million.
The Masters champion also receives the coveted green jacket that symbolizes victory at Augusta National.
Rory McIlroy took a $4.2 million top prize from last year’s $21 million Masters purse and completed a career Grand Slam with his triumph in a playoff over Justin Rose, who was paid $2.268 million.
This year’s runner-up will take home $2.43 million.
The PGA Tour’s Players Championship paid winner Cameron Young $4.5 million last month from a $25 million prize pool.
Events in the Saudi-backed LIV Golf pay $20 million plus $10 million for team results.
