Rory McIlroy was pressed for answers after his dismal showing at the first FedExCup playoff event where he ended in 66th.
The Northern Irishman never featured as rival Scottie Scheffler romped to his first victory since January.
McIlroy was forced to front up to the media, where he explained: “It’s just overall. I think as well when you’re sort of working through some stuff in your swing, then you start to – I certainly do sometimes start to lose awareness of the target and you start to make the golf swing more important than the golf shots sometimes, and that’s obviously not a good thing either.
“It’s sort of like that happy medium of you wanting to get some feels in the golf swing, but at the same time still trying to play golf out there and just thinking of the golf swing, which I sort of after the bad finish on Thursday, I felt like I was just thinking of my golf swing the last few days.”
McIlroy will play this week’s BMW Championship.
“Yeah, it does but, again, at the same time, I’m so far away from where I need to be to even feel like I have a chance,” McIlroy said.
“Yeah, I’ve just got to keep working and hope it turns around a little bit.”
He has only dropped a single spot in the season-long standings from No.12 to No.13.
