Morettini Capping off Splendid Career

ATLANTA, Ga. — Oglethorpe senior, captain and leader of the 2024-25 edition of the Stormy Petrel women’s golf team had a good fall individually, and has her Petrels squad poised to break into the nation’s top 40 teams this spring.

Sophia Morettini hails from Alpharetta, Georgia, and graduated from Woodward Academy where she was a standout golfer on four great teams. Morettini worked as an intern for the Georgia State Golf Association (GSCA) this summer, officiating and directing tournaments from the mountains down to the coast.

“Her work on the course, off the course, and in the classroom has been nothing short of spectacular,” commented assistant coach Mark Random. Morettini is now in the final semester of her four-year career at Oglethorpe.

Morettini sports an 80.7 scoring average for the fall season. Over her four tournament schedule, she has totaled a win-loss record of 124-197 with nine ties. Morettinin is ranked No. 61 in the south region and No. 291 in the nation. Her best finish was T-29 at the Joe and Lee Duncan Invitational with rounds of 81-78=159.

“The impact Sophia has made on our campus and in our community will be remembered forever,” added head coach Jim Owen. “What an incredible influence she has been and will be forever for Oglethorpe golf.”

The Stormy Petrels will open the spring season in Statesboro, Georgia, at the Berry College South Invitational March 9-11. The squad will look to win its first Southern Athletic Association title in program history during the late April tournament in Nashville. The Petrels have finished runner-up four times in the last 12 years and look to take the next step under the captaincy of Morettini.
