Collin Morikawa has not been shy when it comes to making drastic changes and is twisting again as he heads into the 2025 FedEx Cup Playoffs.
This week at the FedEx St. Jude Championship, Morikawa will have his fifth different caddie of the season on the bag: Mark Urbanek, the long-time looper for Tony Finau.
The pairing had been working in tandem for five years before opting for a change ahead of The Open last month at Royal Portrush.
And the world number six is playing his fifth different card in 2025 as he teams up with Urbanek to try to regain some much-needed consistency at TPC Southwind.
Morikawa has been searching for a full-time caddie to replace JJ Jakovac, who split from him in April after working together throughout his entire professional career.
Rather than the competitive event winning in 2025 he had hoped for, it has been a year of experimentation as he strives to find a Major-winning formula and a new long-term caddie.
Joe Greiner, Billy Foster, and KK Limbhaust have all completed stints on his bag this year. Will Urbanek make a more lasting impression?
Equipment changes and a period of transition for Collin Morikawa
The two-time Major winner has had a below-par season for his weighty standards, and the three FedEx Cup post-season events will be his final meaningful roll of the dice.
When you consider his 2025 results, his 19th place in the FedEx Cup standings is not a bad outcome; however, back-to-back missed cuts at the links in Scotland are not the preparation he needed.
And there’s no suggestion that Urbanek may even be given time to prove his worth, with it being reported he may only feature at the beginning of Morikawa’s post-season run.
Equipment-wise, he has been just as experimental – and why not, 2025 has long been a dead rubber for the six-time PGA Tour winner in a dry season.
At the 2025 Genesis Scottish Open, he made a familiar switch, ditching his usual blade short irons and opting for cavity-back Taylormade P7CB irons instead.
The move was reminiscent of a similar change in 2021 that resulted in an Open win at Royal St. George’s.
Morikawa explained the logic behind the change in discussion with GolfWRX: “With my blades, sometimes I just catch it thin all the time. It obviously worked a few years ago, and we’ve kind of done it every year.”
It is safe to say his change in Europe didn’t have much success, but he will be hoping it brings him more luck in Memphis later this week.
Collin Morikawa joins Scheffler and McIlroy with a mallet head putter
A change of irons is not Morikawa’s only change of tactic in recent weeks, with another drastic rejig coming in the form of a new style of putter at the Rocket Classic.
He opted to make a mid-round switch in Detroit from his custom Logan Olson blade to a bulkier TaylorMade Spider mallet, telling the PGA Tour after: “I was putting like a blind man.”
The chunkier TaylorMade design is in the bag of several PGA Tour stars, namely the top two players in the world, Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy, who have claimed three Majors between them this year.
Morikawa is not afraid of making the big calls with his personnel and equipment on the golf course.
Whether his drastic changes this season will bring him a change of fortunes in the PGA Tour postseason remains to be seen.
