Moutai Singapore Open – Singapore Island Country Club – November 6-9

A LIV contract on the line for Hensby

An International Series event and a tournament which is a part of a nine-event schedule supported by the LIV Golf League, the 2025 Moutai Singapore Open tees off at the Singapore Island Country Club (SICC) later today.

The cream of the Asian Tour, combined with 15 Australians and a sprinkling of players from the LIV Golf will compete for a championship trophy with a history dating back to 1961, one featuring an impressive list of former winners.

However, while competition will be intense as players chase the winner’s share, then whatever comes after that, of the US$2million prize purse, with a recent LIV announcement just a matter of days prior to the start of the Moutai Singapore Open, the stakes have been raised even higher.

Previously the leader of the International Series points list at season’s end gained a coveted LIV Golf contract for the following year, now it will be two, which brings an Australian well and truly into contention for a place on LIV in 2026.

It’s a big week for Wade Ormsby at the 2025 Singapore Open.

Wade Ormsby, the 45-year-old South Australian who was the winner of the Jakarta International Championship in early October, heads into the Singapore Open sitting fourth but only behind fellow Aussie Lucas Herbert (not in the field this week but already a member of LIV), a Zimbabwean in Scott Vincent and Miguel Tabuena of the Philippines.

Which provides Ormsby an outstanding opportunity to return to LIV where he played in 2022 and has been a league reserve in each of the three subsequent seasons.

Having missed the cut in the Philippines and then last week in Hong Kong hasn’t helped his cause, but with this week’s event in Singapore, then the PIF Saudi International, Ormsby, along with his fellow Australians, has plenty to play for this week.

Joining Hensby at the SICC will be a large contingent of Australians, all equally keen to make their mark, amongst them young amateur Harry Takis, coming off a third-place finish at the Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship in Dubai, along with veteran campaigner Scott Hend.

Now competing in over-50’s events, while also still playing against the younger brigade in Asia and Europe, Hend comes into the event in arguably the best form of all the Aussies his tie for sixth in Hong Kong last week.

The Australians however won’t have it all their own way, against a field headlined by Englishman Paul Casey and fellow LIV Tour players Talor Gooch and Thomas Pieters.

At a pre-tournament press conference, Casey, a runner up at the 2019 Singapore Open, talked up his chances.

“I like the course — it’s my first time here at SICC. You know I love playing in Singapore, and I handle the heat fairly well. I think the course suits my game. I drive it well, and I’m traditionally a good ball striker,” Casey said.

Englishman Paul Casey talked up his chances of success in Singapore.

And while maybe not quite as confident as Casey, Tabuena, a recent International Series winner on home soil in the Philippines, is standing between Hensby and the other Australians for one of the two LIV contracts on offer.

“It was nowhere on my radar before the Philippines,” he said. “But now, after that win, it certainly is. Still, it’s not something I can or should force. You have to stick to your game plan, your process, your recovery — and just let everything happen and be free on the golf course.”

The Moutai Singapore Open returns to a world-class venue, boasts a stellar field, while carrying significant ranking implications, with eyes will be on Singapore this week.

As Casey added: “These events aren’t just stops on a calendar anymore. They’re high-quality, high-reward events, and it’s exciting to be part of that.”

All four days of the Moutai Singapore Open will be broadcast in Australia on Fox Sports and Kayo.
