The Singapore Open – back where it belongs

THE Singapore Open, a tournament with a long and storied history is back where it belongs as a major event on the Asian Tour schedule. 

Last played in 2022, The Moutai Singapore Open returns in 2025 as one of 10 International Series events to be played on the Asian Tour, with the championship scheduled to tee off at The Singapore Island Country Club (New Course – Millennium & Pierce) from November 6-9.

Sanctioned by the Singapore Golf Association (SGA) and Asian Tour, with Kweichow Moutai coming on board as the new title sponsor, the Moutai Singapore Open boasts a list of former winners that include household golfing names the likes of Adam Scott, who is a three-time champion, Sergio Garcia, Matt Kuchar and Ian Poulter. 

International Series tournaments present a pathway to the LIV Golf Tour and feature elevated prize money, with players at the Singapore Open to compete for a total purse of US$2 million.

First staged in 1961 as a part of Asia’s first professional golf circuit, which comprised a handful of tournaments in Hong Kong, the Philippines, Malaysia and Japan, the 2025 championship returns to the venue where the Singapore Open was contested in its inaugural year, and for more than 25 years after that, through until 1987. 

Tan Chong Huat, President of the Singapore Golf Association (SGA) said: “Our National Open is one of Singapore’s premier sporting events, and we are overjoyed it is returning to the calendar later this year with a dynamic new title sponsor at one of the country’s most acclaimed golfing venues.”

Cho Minn Thant, Commissioner & CEO, Asian Tour added: “The Singapore Open is an integral part of Asian Tour history and one of our most-prized tournaments – so we are thrilled it is returning to our schedule later this year. 

“It is now set for another exciting new chapter, and we are eternally grateful to Kweichow Moutai for paving the way for the tournament’s return. They will be an ambitious partner
who understand the importance of the Singapore Open past, present and future,” Mr Cho said.

While Australian Ian Roberts, the current General Manager at Singapore Island Country Club, is a former tournament professional and someone with a long history of working at prestigious golf clubs in Asia, with Roberts ready to welcome a world class field for the 2025 event. 

“We are delighted to welcome the return of the Singapore Open to the venue where it all started in 1961. The Singapore Open has given fans, both locally and internationally many unforgettable memories, especially with the thrilling drama and action that have unfolded over the years,” Roberts said.

“We are confident our New course will provide the players with a stern test of golf while captivating fans again with another week of top-class golf action.”

Moutai Singapore Open – the field 

At the time of Inside Golf going to print the final make up of the 2025 Moutai Singapore Open field had yet to be determined, however as an International Series event, it was sure to attract the cream of Asian Tour talent, a selection of international competitors along with a sprinkling of LIV Golf Tour stars. 

As of late September, the list of players locked in to compete was headlined by Paul Casey, an Englishman with 15 wins on the European Tour, three victories on the PGA TOUR and two Asia Tour titles on what is an impressive resume.  

Englishman Paul Casey will be a star attraction at the 2025 Moutai Singapore Open.

Long-hitting fellow LIV Golf tour member Peter Uihlein, John Catlin, an American with six Asian Tour titles to his credit and the well-credentialled and well-travelled Zimbabwean Scott Vincent, the leader of the Asian Tour Order of Merit (following the Indonesian Open), were also confirmed as starters. 

Included amongst those heading up the Asian challenge will be defending champion Sadom Kaewkanjana, who won the last staging of the Singapore Open in 2022, while another former winner from Thailand in Jazz Janewattananond joins a strong contingent of local players.
