Muirfield Golf Club in Scotland has been chosen to host the Senior Open Championship in 2028 – a full 21 years after it staged the event for first time in 2007.
Home to the Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers, Muirfield has played host to many special events in its rich history, including 16 renewals of The Open, 11 Amateur Championships, the 1973 Ryder Cup, the Walker Cup in 1959 and 1979, the Curtis Cup in 1952 and most recently the AIG Women’s Open Championship in 2022.
Muirfield last hosted The Open in 2013, when Phil Mickelson lifted the Claret Jug, but the East Lothian club has not been chosen to host golf’s oldest major championship since then.
The privately-owned club was taken off the Open rota by The R&A in 2016 when the men-only membership voted against allowing women to join the club.
After widespread condemnation, the club voted again on the issue in 2017, after which 498 of the 621 members (80%) voted to allow women in. After that vote the club was reinstated as an Open host venue.
Edward Kitson, Championship Director of ISPS HANDA Senior Open, said: “We are thrilled to be returning to Muirfield for the ISPS HANDA Senior Open in 2028. This will be just the second time that we have taken the Senior Open to this historic championship links.
“The course is rated by many as one of the best in the country and we look forward to seeing the legends of the game compete there once again in 2028.”
