Netflix has announced the development of a sequel to the 1996 comedy “Happy Gilmore,” with Adam Sandler reprising his iconic role as the unorthodox golfer.
The original film, directed by Dennis Dugan and co-written by Sandler and Tim Herlihy, has remained a beloved classic for nearly three decades and golf fans in particular got excited after the announcement via Netflix on Twitter.

Christopher McDonald, who portrayed the antagonist Shooter McGavin, revealed the sequel’s progress during an interview on Audacy’s 92.3 The Fan. McDonald mentioned that Sandler had shown him a draft of the new script, expressing enthusiasm about returning to the character that fans have long demanded to see again.
Netflix, which has an established partnership with Sandler and his production company Happy Madison, will produce the sequel. The streaming giant has yet to release specific plot details or confirm the full cast. However, speculation is rife about the return of other original cast members, including Julie Bowen, who played Happy’s love interest Virginia Venit.
The original “Happy Gilmore” followed the story of a failed hockey player who discovers a talent for golf, using his skills to save his grandmother’s house from foreclosure.
