No. 10 Petrels open spring runner-up in Savannah

SAVANNAH, Ga.— Ryan Dunn and Diego Passos finished tied for ninth, Jackson Hiller finished 14th, and the No. 10 Oglethorpe men’s golf team landed runner-up at the Savannah Invitational Tuesday in the spring opener. The Stormy Petrels erased a 15-stroke deficit in the final round to make the climb to second place.

Passos and Hiller both posted low rounds of 67, Passos in Monday’s first round and Hiller in Tuesday’s round. The latter helped Oglethorpe post a blistering 280 over the last 18 holes as they secured the runner-up spot alongside No. 8 Washington and Lee and were 10 strokes ahead of fourth place.

Passos (67-75-71) had six birdies in the opening round and finished 4 under par over the last eight holes. Hiller (71-77-67) had a bogey-free final round which included a 2 under stretch across the last five holes.

Dunn (73-72-68) finished his last round on a high note as well. One stroke back of Hiller for the low round of the second day, Dunn has six birdies and finished 4 under over the last 10.

Rounding out Oglethorpe’s scoring was Corbin Scott who fired a consistent 73-72-74 to claim T26.

Oglethorpe (282-296-280) had the second lowest round of Tuesday, helping them climb one spot and finish second alongside Washington and Lee. No. 1 Huntingdon ran away with the win as a team, finishing 30 under par.

The Petrels competed in a nationally competitive field with several other national top-10’s and top-25’s in attendance. Other top-10 teams in the mix included No. 2 Emory, No. 3 Carnegie Mellon, No. 6 Sewanee, No. 7 Methodist and No. 8 Washington and Lee.

Tournament Notes

  • Oglethorpe finished second in par 4 scoring, fourth in par 5 scoring and seventh in par 3 scoring.
  • The team solo led the field with three eagles. Dunn eagled hole #11 in the opening round, Hiller eagled #4 in the opening round, and Scott eagled hole #11 in the second round.
  • Oglethorpe ranked fourth in both birdies (47) and pars (172).
  • Dunn ranked T5 in par 3 scoring at 2 under. Hiller (-1) and Passos (E) ranked T6 and T10 in par 4 scoring.
  • Passos ranked T4 in birdies with 14 while Scott ranked T5 in pars with 38.

Oglethorpe heads to Pinehurst, North Carolina, for the Tiger Invitational next week at Forest Creek Golf Club. The event is set for Monday-Tuesday and marks the second of four events on the Stormy Petrels’ spring calendar prior to the SAA Championships and NCAA Championships.
