No. 3 Petrels run away with Camp Lejeune title

JACKSONVILLE, Nc.Michael O’Sullivan finished at the top of the individual leaderboard, and the No. 3 Oglethorpe men’s golf team extended its lead on the way to victory at the 51st annual Camp Lejeune Marine Intercollegiate Sunday at Paradise Point Golf Club.

Oglethorpe won the title with scores of 286-282-293, finishing as the only team under par at 3 under. It marked the second straight team title for the Stormy Petrels as they took the top spot against 30 elite teams two weeks ago at Jekyll Island.

This week’s field was 20 more elite teams. No. 7 Lynchburg took runner-up at 11 over par. Third-place Husson finished at 22 over par.

O’Sullivan had Sunday’s low round by two strokes, climbing up six spots to share the lead after 54 holes. However, the senior lost a playoff to Averett’s Killian O’Reilly for medalist honors.

O’Sullivan for the week carded scores of 72-72-69 on the 6851-yard par 72 course. Jackson Hiller, who led the field after round two on Saturday, took the next spot in T4 with rounds of 71-69-75. Ryan Dunn finished T7 at 73-69-75, and Sam Karman took T14 at 70-73-78.

In all, three Stormy Petrels represented the top seven and two were in the top four.

After the first two rounds through Saturday, Oglethorpe was the only team under par and sat at 8 under with a 12-stroke lead. Sunday, the Petrels expanded the lead after shooting 5 over as a team. They stayed under par and won the event by 14 strokes.

Tournament Notes

The Petrels led the field in par 4 scoring, par 5 scoring and birdies. They were second in par 3 scoring and eagles (three).

On the par 5’s, Oglethorpe was particularly dialed in with an 18 under effort. Oglethorpe’s 50 birdies were five better than the rest of the field.

Dunn finished even par on the par 3’s, second in the field. O’Sullivan was even on the par 4’s, taking fourth in the field. Dunn and Hiller co-led the field on the par 5’s at 6 under, and O’Sullivan was one stroke back of that at 5 under.

O’Sullivan’s 14 birdies led the field, while Hiller (12) and Dunn (11) were both top five in that category.

Beck Lewis, Dunn and Hiller each posted an eagle on the weekend. Hiller eagled the par 5 No. 3 hole on Friday. Lewis eagled the same hole on Saturday. Dunn eagled the par 5 No. 18 hole on Saturday.

Up Next

Oglethorpe will compete at the Bill Cochran Collegiate April 15-16 and then send the B team to the Emory Spring Invitational April 20-21. That will wrap up the regular season as the Stormy Petrels will then head to the Southern Athletic Association Championships Friday-Sunday, April 26-28.
