Oosthuizen: LIV Golf bigger than any individual

Louis Oosthuizen has played down the significance of Brooks Koepka’s return to the PGA Tour from LIV Golf.

Speaking to South African media during a LIV Golf virtual round table this week, the former Open champion said those who have committed to the breakaway LIV circuit are still firmly content with their decision.

Koepka, a five-time Major champion, was this week reinstated by the PGA Tour under its newly introduced Returning Members Programme. The policy applies only to players who have won a Major or The Players Championship since 2022, limiting eligibility among current LIV golfers to Bryson DeChambeau, Jon Rahm and Cameron Smith.

Oosthuizen said he respected Koepka’s choice, but stressed it had little bearing on those who remain with LIV.

“LIV is more than just one person,” Oosthuizen said from Florida as quoted by News24. “As golfers, we all make individual decisions and sometimes they’re not easy. He felt that was the right move for him and I respect that. It’s not really my business.

“I know all of us here are very happy. We’re excited about the direction LIV is going and what it’s trying to build over the next year.”

That optimism is underlined by LIV Golf’s expanding global footprint, with South Africa set to host its first event from 19-22 March at Steyn City, the fifth stop on a 14-tournament schedule.

Oosthuizen said the chance to bring elite golf to African soil had energised players ahead of the new season.

“We had a great players’ meeting and there’s a lot of excitement,” he said. “Everyone is looking forward to coming to South Africa. We want to put on a great tournament and showcase our country.”

Oosthuizen, who joined LIV in 2022 after a stellar 2021 season, said he is still enjoying his golf and remains motivated.

“I’m having fun again, I’m competitive, and I feel there are still good rounds left in me.”
